It will sync up to 1/250 of a second - camera shutter speed.

Q: Will this flash work in ttl automatic mode with canon 40d?

I use the 80d and it works for manual mode and automatic flash mode.

Q: I want to take pictures where there is no light ( night portraits) , will this flash be great purchase for that job?

Probably. Consider adding a larger defuser to the flash for better results.
