Is this yoga mat non-toxic? Does it smell bad like chemicals? Thanks!

I just received mine, and it does have a weird odor. It is NOT the same as a typical new yoga mat smell, but closer to sour body odor. It's not strong, but it is very unpleasant. I unboxed it about 10 minutes ago, and the smell does seem to be fading as it airs out, so that is a good sign.

Ok here is my stupid question. which side of the mat do you use. one is smooth and one has ridges? is it just a matter of preference?

I've used it both ways. It seems counterintuitive, but the most stable way to use the mat is with the ridges down so you're standing on the smooth side, grips the floor to stop it from moving.

Is this mat thick enough to do sit ups comfortably? The flooring under the mat would be hard woood.

Yes. The mat is thick and I use it on wood floor for yoga, planks, sit ups, etc.

can this be cut into 1" strips with a knife?

There's not much you can't do with a properly sharpened knife. I do want to caution you, if you're planning an escape from your room at the top of a tower, I'd probably stick with the tried and true approach of tying sheets together...1" strips of foam may not be overly reliable.
