Read the label carefully as all calcium tablets available are certainly not the same even if it is another Citracal product. The slow release 1200 is taken 2 caplets once daily! Citracal also makes a 1200 mg NOT slow release and is taken 2 caplets twice a day. I made this mistake, thinking what could be the difference other than lower price only to discover my lab resulted in a below desired level for calcium. In my case I just did not consistently get 2 caplets in twice a day. These slow release are still very large and not simple to swallow but managable and provided what was needed. Always ask your physician but I found these to be perfect and also strongly recommended by my MD. No after taste or odors. Plenty of D3 in the daily dose as well.

I have been taking Calcium pills for over twenty years now, I have seen everything, from the days of horse-sized pills, with no Vitamin D ( D is sort of necessary, since your body will not process the Calcium without it.), to the various heated arguments about just what the precise and correct type of Calcium was that one should take, down to the ultimate battle of just what the precise correct dosage was - I have been there, I bear the battle scars proudly upon my body. This is a good calcium supplement, containing the exact ingredients recommended by my doctor. However, taking them has turned into a chore so far. They are actually not too difficult to swallow whole, their shape helps. The first two pills I swallowed okay, but shortly afterwards my stomach felt like I had swallowed a small rock. Nothing I ate or drank made the feeling totally subside until the next day. Apparently, the slow release function causes the pills to dissolve very very slowly. Next day, I tried dissolving a pill in hot tea. It pretty well disappeared in the tea (cut in halves) but there were granules left in the cup, no taste though. So then I tried cutting the pills in half and was able to take easily enough for a few days, until a sharp edge caught in my throat and actually cut it a bit. Very painful. It does seem that cutting the pills helps them dissolve better in the stomach, the hard coating not causing the slow slow dissolve. Now I am cautiously cutting the pills into quarter pieces, one pill at night and one in the morning. I suppose it's a good product, but a ridiculous amount of work to take. If I wasn't watching calories, it would be easier to just drink 4 glasses of milk.

My doctor suggested I take this brand with the slow release of Calcium plus Vitamin D3. I don't like taking the large pills but I do follow the directions to take them with a full glass of water and remain standing while swallowing them. I also take a Vitamin K2 capsule with them which is not in this formula. The price on Amazon is significantly lower than in my local store which was a big help since I need them to help with my calcium intake to support my bones and teeth. I find it best to take them in the morning after a meal as directed so they can be released throughout the day. So far no problems with digesting them so I am pleased.
