Will Well 2 Pack Retractable Keychain - Heavy Duty Metal Badge Reel - Black

I bought these retractable keychains to use with the beaded lanyards I make, and they work perfectly! They are sturdy, easy to attach, and the retractable feature makes them convenient for everyday use. They add a nice finishing touch to my lanyards and make them more functional. Great quality and a great value!

I have held a few jobs that require a badge. Most jobs give you a cheap nylon neck lanyard; I do not like wearing things around my neck. These are better quality, very difficult to break, and are a good alternative for me. Clip right onto my belt.

Edit: As of 08Oct25, the second kevlar cord has snapped. I ordered a competitor product but was a little too hasty and didn't realize it had some ridiculous ball joint lock on it which I'm just not really vibing with, so I'm just deciding to purchase these again. Average lifespan of 6 months on these in my limited experience so far, but they feel nicer than the Key-bak I bought. I think this is one of those purchases that no matter what brand you get, it's just kind of garbage. I doubt there's any company out there making these that would truly feel like a BIFL purchase - so I may as well just get the garbage I like.I'd like to preface this review with saying that while I rate this product a 4/5, one did have the fiber cord snap within 6 months of purchase. However, I like the product enough that I'm personally willing to not hold that against it.That being said; right up until the fiber cord snapped I really had 0 issues with this product. I specifically bought these because the company provided keyback/badge holder was just ever so slightly not strong enough to hold the weight of my work keys and badge, and the clip on it was constantly becoming loose and falling off of my pocket. It feels nice in the hand, and if the spare one from the box lasts another 6 months or so I'll be pretty pleased with the purchase. They're fairly inexpensive and while I may not buy these specific ones again, I do think it's still a good product.It's hard for me to knock the product when I use my badge at work literally hundreds of times a day to go through tons of doors. I also keep my work keys on this same retractable holder, which I guess could've put some unusual strain on it. For the average person who may only need to use this thing a dozen times a day? I'd imagine it would last a pretty long time. I wish it was a little more robust because I really do like the way it looks. The coating wears off pretty quickly, so I spent some time polishing my spare one to reveal the brass underneath.

This is the second time I've bought these and I was debating between 4 and 5 stars but settled on 5 stars because my gripes are things I only experienced outside the normal usage of this item. For 8 months my badge lives in my hip pocket with the reel dangling out while the other 4 months I wear it on my lapel.While in my pocket it banged around on alot of things which deteriorated the finish of the reel, bent the clasp, cracked the housing, and the screw that holds the 2 halves of the housing together loosened and prevented the cord from retracting. I was able to bend the clasp back into working order and disassemble the reel to rewind the spring and cord which now works like normal. Even with a cracked housing and worn finished it looks and works good.I've never lost my badge because the snap that attaches to the badge keeps it secured to the reel. The price is more than fair for the quality of the product. It's about as easy to use as it can get.

VERY heavy duty. It's gotten a little scratched up over time, but nothing that's actually negatively affected the functionality. I use it to hold all of my keys, and it's MORE than strong enough to hold all of them up without any slack. But I've got absolutely zero concerns of the cord snapping since it's actual wire rather than string.If used to hold onto cards, it would take far more than could fit on the ring to be able to pull itself down under its own weight. I've got a pretty large phone, but I'm sure if it had a case with a ring/slit for this to clip onto it, that it could also hold my phone up, too.

I'm in maintenance and my company issues cheap plastic retracting lanyards with our security/access badges. I've broken several over the years, almost losing my access badge and master key one time. I decided I needed to get a better one, and went to the local Home Depot. They had a beaded chain-model that seemed better, so I bought it. I broke that one within a few months as well.After checking around on amazon I decided to go with this model. So far its has been great. The action is really smooth, no extra force needed to get it started. The outer metal body seems solid and the braided steel cable has a lot of strength. There is also a small rubber spacer where the cable meets the key chain, this help reduce shock when letting your badge/key go and letting it retract by itself. The plastic on the card holder has reinforcements woven into it so seems like it will last. the only part I'm unsure of the the rotating action inside. It seems great now but that tends to be the part that breaks over time, I'll update my review if/when it finally breaks.Overall very happy so far, 5 Stars for a well designed and built product that does its job well. Also really happy about the price, gave the second on to another maintenance guy.Update 8/27/19: I've been using this every day for several months without a problem, so far so good.Update 9/18/20: It finally broke after well over a year of heavy use. A kink formed in the braided steel cable that eventually gave out. I immediately order a replacement, this is the best badge holder I have ever used!Update 7/21/21: The second one i bought is still going strong, almost a year in

I was looking for a durable badge reel because the cheap plastic ones always seem to break after a few months. Based on the description, this all-metal, heavy-duty reel from Will Well seemed like the perfect, long-lasting solution.Right out of the package, the build quality is impressive. The glossy black casing is solid metal, and the UHMWPE fiber cord feels incredibly tough, like it could last for years. It definitely lives up to the "heavy-duty" name in terms of its materials and construction.However, the "heavy-duty" aspect is also its biggest flaw for my needs. The retraction mechanism inside is *extremely* strong. I only carry my ID badge and one key, and when I let go after swiping my card, the reel yanks back with so much force that it often pulls the entire clip right off my belt loop or shirt pocket. I find myself having to re-clip the whole unit back on several times a day, which defeats the purpose of convenience.I think this reel would be fantastic for someone who carries a much heavier load—like a custodian with a large bundle of 5-8 keys, or someone with a small but heavy tool attached. For that kind of weight, the spring strength would probably be perfect and prevent sagging. But for just a standard ID badge, it's complete overkill.Pros:* Excellent build quality with all-metal construction.* The pull cord is extremely strong and durable.* Would easily support a heavy set of keys without sagging.Cons:* Retraction spring is far too powerful for light loads (like just an ID badge).* Aggressive recoil can pull the clip right off your belt or clothing when you are scanning the badge.In the end, this is a well-made product that unfortunately doesn't work for my specific use case. It’s too powerful for its own good unless you plan on weighing it down significantly.
