Great all around winter coat with some flaws that can be overcome.
I bought one of their oilskin hats, and was so impressed with the quality and design that when I needed a coat, I got this one. At first I was both impressed with the quality of craftsmanship and design details, and put off by the creosote-like smell. At times I sprayed it with Lysol's Neutra Air which worked temporarily to remove the odor, but after a while it came back. I've had it for about 6 weeks now and I can say the odor is almost entirely gone. It will probably be completely gone in another few weeks, but it's not objectionable now. 2 weeks or even 4 weeks is not long enough to air it out to dissipate the odor... at least not in the winter. Since so many people object to the odor, I don't know why the manufacturer doesn't air them out before packaging and shipping. It's a shame, because the jacket is probably the best one I've ever owned. But I wouldn't call it a jacket, it's more like a coat. It's heavy (which doesn't bother me) and very warm. I've worn it in zero degree weather and was not cold at all. But if it's 40 degrees and sunny you have to open the front or else it gets too hot. It's not for mild weather. The top closes well around the neck, and with the collar up and a bomber hat on, it's almost like having a full hood. However, I also ordered the hood from this company which is made for their dusters. Outback doesn't say the hood also goes with the Pathfinder, but I contacted them and they said it can be attached if a tailor or cleaner inserts snaps into the collar. Why they don't sell it with pre-installed snaps and promote it as having an optional hood, I don't know. It's a marketing error as far as I'm concerned. I took it to a cobbler who attached the hood, and now I love this coat even more. The hood is light and almost unnoticeable, but when up it works great to keep out wind, rain or snow. The hood's storm flap works well, and there's a small visor built into the hood which is also a nice feature. And it fits around a winter hat, so you can keep your head and ears warm and well as dry and out of the wind. I also had the cobbler sew in a new zipper. The zipper it comes with is not adequate. At least mine wasn't. No matter how I tried to zip it up, it would take a number of attempts before I could get it to work. A double zipper is a great feature, and along with the side snaps it makes driving with this coat comfortable. But they should spend a few dollars more and put in a full metal zipper instead of zipper with metal teeth in a plastic base. The cobbler put in a brass YKK #10 zipper, which is a bit large but works and looks great. It did add to the cost of the coat, though. To me, it was worth it rather than returning the coat or getting an exchange, which might have the same zipper problem. The cobbler was so impressed with this coat that he spent many minutes with me talking about it and examining it. He used to be a policeman and was impressed with the concealed carry pocket, but also with the overall quality and design. He said he was going to get one for himself. If I was thin, I would wear a large coat or shirt, but since I'm a bit overweight in the abdomen I usually get extra large so it's not too tight. Based on reviews that say the size runs large, I got this coat in a large and it fits perfectly. It's not too tight or too loose, it doesn't bind anywhere, the sleeves are just the right length... perfect. I'm 5'10, weight 180 lbs., 38 waist, 30" sleeve... if that helps anyone. This coat sheds water completely, is warm, and is tough. I wear it when walking the dogs, feeding hay to horses, carrying firewood, and doing other chores of country living, as well as when driving to town, shopping and going to work. It looks great, better than the pictures. Other people like the way it looks, also. With this coat you can have a sophisticated town coat, rain coat and work coat, all in one. If you don't like the smell, hang it up somewhere with air circulation, and wait a couple of months.

Best Jacket Ever.
Best jacket ever! High quality. Warm and comfortable while really looking good. The fit is perfect. I owned this style of jacket years ago and this is superior to the other brand. Other reviews cited zipper issues, but there are none with this version. It is heavy and warm but an exceptional value for the price!

What a great well-made jacket.........
I wear some things XL and some things L. A few months ago I ordered a XL Deer Hunter and loved it. It was a tad big for me but enjoyed it so much instead of returning it and exchanging it for a L I kept it. After wearing it a few times I realized I should have exchanged it for a L. When kids came for Christmas I had my son-n-law try it on (a little bigger than I am) and was a perfect fit, and he is now the proud owner of a great jacket. I went on-line to order a large in the same jacket for me and L was out of stock so I ordered a L in the Pathfinder, it came a couple days later, is a perfect fit, and I could not be happier. This jacket is quality made, rugged, functional, not cheap, but is well worth the cost. I live in Colorado, just went through a good snow and sub-zero temperature spell, was outside all day yesterday and the jacket kept me as warm as a very expensive down-filled parka. If you want a good looking, well made, functional, and rugged jacket, Outback Trading Company is the place to shop; lots of options for waterproof oilskin jackets. Is nice to order something that turns out to be better than advertised or expected.

Excellent Quality Coat
The quality of this coat is better than I expected. This is a very manly looking coat with a very nice and warm inner lining. I can tell with out a doubt that I will get many years of winters use. Love the oiled leather collar. All of the exterior pockets are placed perfectly. The inner concealed carry pocket even has a sort of holster type of band to help securely hold your weapon or whatever else you want to place in it. It is also zippered. The oilskin outer shell is a heavy duty material that I am sure is more than thorny brush proof. I believe it is 12oz cotton. Many other oilskin jackets use 8oz cotton. It is western rancher styled. Definitely NOT drugstore cowboy. This is one tough very good looking manly coat. Wear it in the field or wear it to town. I love this coat! Top off the look with a quality Stetson felt/fur or Resistol hat...folks will notice you as if you are the Marlboro Man when you walk by them. I highly recommend this coat if you are contemplating buying one. I am very pleased. I am sure you will be too. I tip my hat to the Outback Trading Co. Good job on everything...design, quality and features. Rain and wind proof and just the right mid-length with an inner drawstring to snug up the waist area if needed. Oh yeah, the snaps at the bottom sides are nice if you need to unsnap to give a little more roominess when riding your horse or motorcycle.

Great and waterproof.
First - I listened to the people who said to order a size down and I had to return it and reorder with my normal size. I also have had their short duster for years. It is unlined and needed to be ordered one size down. It feels like this coat is the same external size, but the inner fleece lining takes up some room. Anyway, my normal size fits perfectly. The coat looks great, is very warm, and based on my experience with my other coat and hat, 100% waterproof.

Great winter coat
This is a great coat for those chilly and foul weather days. This morning it was 9 degrees F, I put on my new Outback coat and was kept toasty warm. The outer shell material rugged, should hold up to wear and tear for years to come and has 6 exterior pockets and has 2 more inner pockets 1 of which is a concealed carry pocket. This coat appears to be of high quality. If you’re looking for a coat for to battle cold, snow or rain, this coat is well worth consideration.

Impressive quality, My favorite coat.
Just received this Outback Pathfinder and I already know I’ll be wearing it for a long time. Someone put thought into the making and design of this jacket/ coat. Lots of useful pockets, zippers and snaps not Velcro. Nothing looks or feels cheap because it isn’t. Its quality is impressive and I’m not easily impressed. Size runs a bit larger than normal—- I wear XL —- and it gives me room to layer a sweater underneath without starting to feel tightness when I move around but it doesn’t feel loose or sag. People will be asking me where I got this. There’s a drawstring on the inside around the waist so that I can pull in to get a good fit if I’m walking or I can loosen it up if I’m driving the truck or need some extra room. The only downside I can see is that if the temperature is about forty degrees or more this coat could be a bit much. But I think the bitter cold and wind will be no match for this coat. We’ll see. One more thing; I like the way it was packaged and presented. It was laid out in a large flat box about 2’ x 3’ NOT rolled up and stuffed into a sack to save 40 cents on shipping. Looks like they take pride in their product and it shows.

Worth the wait...............
Finally got cold enough to wear, and no disappointment, went outside with a nasty wind & stayed warm due to draw sting at the waist, super quality coat, now to wait for snow & 15 below. Totally recommend, Alberta, Canada.

Love this Jacket
It took about 4 weeks for delivery but I ordered it well in advance of Christmas. My husband had seen this jacket while on a camping trip at one of the Northern Outfitters Stores and liked it but it was summer so he decided to buy it on his way back from a fall fishing trip and they were sold out. He loves it! It sure was a surprise for him.
