Asthma - this is the only effective second-hand smoke filter I have found
Update in 2016:I've had this mask for a couple of years now, and I have reduced my asthma attacks more than 99%. I was having attacks almost bi-weekly because of secondhand smoke on campus. Now that I wear this whenever I'm outside, I SEE the smokers but I don't SMELL the smokers! Since I started using this mask, I'm down to having an attack only a few times a year, usually from things like perfume or lysol when I'm indoors and not wearing the mask, but NOT from outdoor cigarettes anymore. Sure, I have to look like a jerk while I'm walking around in public places that SHOULD be safe for people, but at least I'm not going to die just because of someone else's poor life choices. :] I added a no-smoking patch to the front of the respirator portion of the mask, so at least people have a clue as to why I'm wearing it. It's also very handy for going between the car and the grocery store. WHY on EARTH do people go stand in front of a grocery store to smoke!? And smoking in the parking lot isn't any better. I wish smokers would do everyone a favor and sit in their car with the windows rolled up so they don't poison everyone within a 200 yard radius. Anyway, with this mask, you can endure public places long enough to get your groceries loaded up safely. One tip, though. After you get in the car, run the air conditioner or the interior fan (my Honda has an in-cab HEPA filter) for a while to get any residual smoke out of the vehicle before you take off the mask. Also, if you go to a concert, you can carry this with you in case there is a smoke machine in the stage show, or in case people inside of the venue mistake "poisoning other people with second-hand smoke" for "partying". Yes, I know it's an addiction, but so is nymphomania and you don't see people doing THAT on the sidewalk in front of grocery stores, now do you!?To keep out cigarette and other types of smoke, I have found a combination that works for me: I use P95 prefilters with Multi Gas/Vapor Cartridges and change them once or twice a year, whenever it gets hard to breathe: http://www.amazon.com/3M-Low-Maintenance-Cartridge-Purifying-Respirator/dp/B00AEFCP0E?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage and http://www.amazon.com/3M-5P71PB1-Series-Particulate-10-Pack/dp/B0013Z0TV6?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage. IF YOU HAVE ASTHMA DON'T ASSUME THIS WILL WORK FOR YOU! I don't know how much or if any smoke is getting through; it's just not enough to make ME sick. Talk to your doctor and see if he or she can help you figure out a solution that works for you. You might also need to change your filters more often than I do, depending on how much you use the mask.Old Review from 2014:I've had this mask for a few months and I like it a lot. Fits over glasses and seals around the arms. Rubber gasket is soft and comfortable for extended wear. Well made. Comes with an extra set of prefilters. Easy to put on and take off.For asthma I used to wear N95 paper masks, but the smoke would still get through if I couldn't see the smoker and get away from them fast enough. I hate it when smokers hide behind things or in their car & pollute the air without even being seen, because if I don't know where it's coming from, I can't get away from their poison. I've almost died on a couple of occasions because of secondhand smoke in public places, so I finally decided that I'd get a real gas mask. So far, it has worked very well keeping me safe between my car and the grocery store, on campus, going to the movies, etc.

Very happy with this purchase after carefully researching the 3M site and similar products made by their competition!
Very happy with this purchase after carefully researching the 3M site and similar products made by their competition over a period of about one month. No, you can't wear glasses without breaking the seal around the face unless your frames are thin and hug your face all the way up to an inch from the outer edges of your eyes, so wear contact lenses if you've got them.I ordered a size Large 3M 7162 respirator; I wear hats that most manufacturers would label as L-XL in size. The fit was perfect for me and remained perfectly comfortable with multiple uses and at considerable length a few of those times. The strap on the back is a single unit made out of a stretchy, silicone-like material with two tabs at the top (you can almost see them in the item picture at the top) that are so easy to tighten (just pull slightly until it ratchets) and release (apply a single Newton of force to each tab in the forward direction) that I was actually surprised by the quality of the engineering for such a seemingly mundane feature.Installing the filters was incredibly easy (just push in and turn) and the vapor and particulate filtration is incredible. The other reviewers are correct; your nose won't detect a thing because the respirator just works. Gotta get the seal around your face right, so like I said, don't wear glasses unless you have awesome/weird/special frames if you want the respirator to serve its designed purpose 100%.I have had no problem getting enough oxygen under heavy respiration and simulated labored breathing while working on a full day's worth of wood finishing and major automotive projects around the house - you could train for a marathon in this mask and still breath okay, methinks.Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase as this is a high quality mask and seems to be built to last. The filter replacement cost ranges anywhere from $7 to $20+ for a pair of filters depending on the application. This, along with the other factors I've mentioned makes this particular full-face respirator (3M 7162) well worth the cost in my opinion. I bought mine when it was $135 with Prime shipping. Yours and my own continued good health is *priceless*, of course.

Not made for glasses wearers
Overall the mask is great. The only problem is it not made for glasses wearers. If you wear your glasses inside the mask the bows on the glasses break the seal with your face. When you inhale air and any fumes come in through this break on your eyes. I had to make small holes in the rubbber to get my bows through the mask which is a pain when you want to put the mask on quickly. Aside from this, the mask with respirator is great. It is comforable and vision is clear. Just be cautious if you wear glasses and want a perfect seal.

A mask that actually works!
My husband is an art and furniture restorer, and works with many noxious chemicals, by spray and brush. After years of searching for a mask that actually worked (where he didn't have to 'spray-and-run like crazy out of the spray booth'), I am thrilled to find that this one really does. In fact, after spraying some particularly stinky (and I may say carcinogenic) lacquer, he said he could not even smell the fumes! It fits well around the face, providing a good seal, as long as you aren't wearing glasses! In order to accommodate his glasses, he took an old pair, broke off the arms and glued them into position permanently, and he now has perfectly effective protection. It is heavy, though, but absolutely worth it. This is really an answer to prayer, after years of struggling against lung exposure to noxious solvents, Also guards against allergens (never mind toxins!), so we are very pleased with this mask. Must be used as directed, and be careful to maintain the seal. You can get filters for various substances you want to filter out. Also, the company we bought it from was very professional and customer oriented, so we are extremely pleased.

Perfect
I have had so many troubles with gas masks as I have a big beak. This fits perfectly and gives no leaks. Even with glasses on it seems to keep dust and spray particles out. You'll be ready for biowarfare with this bad boy.
