If you must have only one book of Brassai's photography, this is the one.
An impressive written introduction to Brassai with a large representative collection of his photographs from all periods of his career. A beautifully bound biographic, with an extensive collection of his full size photographs, spanning 3 decades, magnificently printed, along with reproductions of his drawings, illustrations, and published pieces. Extensive index and bibliography. A must have for anyone looking to understand this photographer.

A nice overview of work from important eras
This is a beautifully done hardcover with high quality pages printed in Spain. The quality of images reproduced is what you would except. As to what is in the book you can expect a photo history book, which means there are chapters about different periods in Brassai's life, the art he did during that time and important samples. In the early part of the work, for example, there are a few of his drawings, which show what he was interested in before taking up photography. The later sections discuss his life, how he lived, have plenty of text (with references) and images to illustrate the point. There are section on Paris at Night, Graffiti and other important projects. You can expect to see some portrait work of others in which he appears (not easily found elsewhere), and some of the common examples you usually see in connection with his name.Who is this book for? If you have just a passing interest in photography this is not the place to start, but if you have an interest in Brassai's work beyond just the photographs in Paris au nuit, for instance, then this work provides a lot of the back story absent in the picture books on his work over the years. One of the problems with Paris at night is some of the editions were not well done and have poor quality (the index lists just about evey book on Brassai). This book does not have that problem. It is, in this respect, for the person interested in Brassai historically and who wants to see clear representations of his important work. It is not a replacement for his Paris at night (if you want that then buy it as well). At about $45 USD at the time of this writing this book is well worth the money. There are plenty of images, text and plenty to keep the reader occupied.

Brassaï
Robert Capa: The Paris Years 1933-54, I own this book. When it was bought for me I remember thinking "not for me", but then I read it.This book about Brassaï's work has had the same effect on me. It is a well composed and well constructed slice through Brassaï's life. The photographs, paintings, and other material have been obtained from collections all across the globe. Their placement within the text supports his story. The story of his progress as an artist, both at the social level and at the technical. Covering the first 100 pages, the text is well written and of major interest if you want to know something about the man behind all the images that he has produced across the years. The remaining pages are set aside for the photographs for which all of us know him so well. The photographs are beautiful, of good quality and size. Set on a rich paper, they represent a good cross section of his work and are a delight to spend time browsing through, trying to understand how he saw such photograph that most of us would have passed by without a thought. The title, spine and back of the book are composed of a yellow ochre cloth covering, with a photo on the front cover which finishes the outside, giving it the feel of something that you will want to take care of for years to come. A very nice book.
