Lobo Thai Envelope Spicy Coconut Chicken Soup, Tom Ka, 1.76 Ounce (Pack of 10)

I have to agree with other reviewers that this mix has been the closest I can come to making restaurant-quality tom kha gai at home. A couple of tips from my experience with this: 1) Do be sure to heat the packet in hot water (even hot tap water) so the contents come out of the envelope 2) Do not use regular chicken broth in place of water for the recipe on the envelope or it will be too salty. You might be able to get away with low sodium chicken or vegetable broth, but the packet itself has enough salt. 3) Use good quality coconut milk. I won't say which brand, but I used a can of very cheap coconut milk the first time I made this thinking it wouldn't matter. It did matter. Spend the money on a decent can of coconut milk. 4) Per the recipe on the packet, you will need a bit more coconut milk than is typically in one can. You can get away with one can and extra water, but coconut milk is what makes this recipe fantastic. 5) I add the juice of about a half a lime to the soup as well, and also some slices of fresh ginger.

I like Tom Ka a lot. This has all the flavors right there so I don't need to have a bunch of ingredients on hand to enjoy Tom Ka whenever the mood strikes me. You just need a packet of this, a can of unsweetened coconut milk and whatever else you want to throw in - for me it is thinly sliced chicken, mushrooms, garlic, onion, celery and carrots. I can't say I am a Tom Ka snob though. If you like Tom Ka and want easy fix? This product is for you.

We lived in Bangkok for 30 years and this is the closest I’ve had since being back. I reduced the water to one cup and added two cans of unsweetened coconut milk. We added green onion and two thai chilis and half a lime. We used to buy tom kha fresh packs at villa which came with lemongrass, kafir lime leaves, galangal, chilis and some shallots… this is a very close second.

I am Thai. I can cook. And I am a foodie. I only use this brand for Tom Ka because it has the closest flavors to the authentic fresh Thai Tom Ka ingredients. Best option I have being far away from home. It is easy to use. Individual serving in one pack so I don't need to keep the rest of an opened package in a jar in the fridge.
