Weller SPG80L Marksman 80 Watt Stained Glass Soldering Iron

I bought this as a replacement for my grandma's old soldering iron, and it works great. She makes a lot of stained glass lamps, windows, and window hangings, and prefers the 1/4" diameter chisel tip that came with the iron. Her old iron was very similar to this one...maybe even the same model, but had worn out after ~30-years of use. Most of her soldering is done to the copper foil that is wrapped around the edges of each piece of glass, and then filling the gaps between pieces with solder. She uses a home-made temperature controller with the iron at about 80% of max temp. She turned 104 in August and has made ~24 lamps in the past 2 1/2 years!

Okay so this is also my moms christmas gift and though she owns several soldering irons none compares to this amazing 80 watt iron. It comes with two tips and it heats up in seconds. My mom is in stained glass heaven. Weller truly made my christmas shopping a success. Oh and the stand that comes with it means no more burning tables in our home and you can't beat the price, trust me I checked everywhere.

This soldering iron is perfect for soldering PL-259's. The stand is pretty much garbage, I like that the LED shows it's powered up. This thing gets hot hot hot! When buying a soldering iron it is important to pick the right amount of power for the job you plan on doing, this one has been great for the PL-259's. It's been a year and a half, I use my soldering iron at least once a week... still works like the day i received it.

works great! good value. Purchased for a single project. Repairing a vintage guitar amplifier that has multiple chassis grounds. So soldering to the bare chassis metal requires lots of heat. Did the job that irons 5x its cost can do.

Unfortunately, I've been had to adjust my review. The original one I purchased, now over 7 years ago worked great with monthly use and I was satisfied. It failed just earlier this year, so I purchased a replacement. It was used twice and would no longer heat up. I did return it under the warranty but needed one then to complete a job so I purchased a new one as well. Used once (maybe for an hour) and is now won't heat up when used a 2nd time just a month later. Quality in recent units seems to be lacking somewhere. I will replace it under the warranty as well, but it's beginning to look like I'll need to find another brand after using Weller for the past 30+ years. It's just not practical to replace it every couple of jobs.

80w can melt some stuff!

I bought this to replace another iron to assemble PL259, "N", and other connectors with larger coax like RG8, or LMR400, or while using reducers with smaller coax. The iron works great with no noticeable drop in heat while soldering these large coax connectors.

I should of viewed this a bit better. There is no on/off switch. No way to know what temperature it's at. I will keep this item but definitely would not recommend it . The warranty is impossible, another reason for 3stars

Very disappointed! Used this iron 2 times, didn’t get to finish the project of 3 small stained glass feathers and the iron stopped working. light is on but won’t heat at all! Looking for suggestions on return, exchange or refund as the description states it has a lifetime warranty! Appreciate any suggestions!

Used once and wouldnt work the second time even though the light was on there was no heat.
