Bertech-2059T-2x5BKT ESD High Temperature Mat Kit, 2 Feet Wide x 5 Feet Long x 0.08 Inches Thick, Blue, Includes a Wrist Strap and Grounding Cord, RoHS and REACH Compliant (Assembled in USA)

I feel compelled to preface my review noting I'm not a EE or an electrician. I do have HAM radio technician license and a basic understanding of electricity beyond it hurts to get shocked. The mat I received came with a grounding wire which was dutifully hard wired to a ground wire in my house. I had my EE wife show me how to use my meter to check for ground. As expected, both of the female banana plugs on the ground wire showed as properly grounded as did the wrist strap plugged into either banana plug outlet. However, the metal snap on the underside of the grounding wire (directly below the banana plugs and presumably also there to function as a ground) did not show as being grounded. The snap was a single piece of metal but I still tested it in several places. I went back and confirmed the banana plugs still showed as grounded. I tried to call Bertech for help and was advised to send an email to support. I posted a question here in the FAQ and I think the person who answered agreed this was wrong. I consulted my EE wife who agreed it seemed wrong and asked me to stop asking her questions about electricity because she's been in non technical roles for 20 years and it hurts her brain to think about it. So, long story "short", unless the clip is there solely to secure the ground strap to the mat, I recieved a defective grounding wire. I've since ordered a new mat and I'm still waiting to hear back from Bertech support.

I saw mixed commentary in reviews about scent/smell from the mat, so I asked and got a few answers, one of which was from the manufacturer, to wit:"Yes, they do have a smell but normally when you lay out the mat the smell should go away eventually after a couple of days."For me, it was a couple of _hours_. While I'm not reactive - I just smell certain things very strongly - I do find the chemical/rubber smell pretty hard to deal with. I'm pleased to say this mat is fine. Definitely did have a bit of an "oof" out of the box, but I left it laid out flat on my washing machine for a couple of hours and when I came back, it was just fine.(We do have a HEPA filter next to the washing machine, it was running on low.)So yeah, if my sample is typical, and you're worried about scent / smell issues, you're almost certainly going to be fine with it. I'm currently writing this review at the workbench with this mat and if it weren't for the boxes I've got sitting on the edges pressing out the curl (other reviewers note you need to do this too, but that it works), I wouldn't even know it was there.

This item has a lot of size options so let me start by saying I got the 18 by 30 inch with .08 inch thickness.I am a low use user. In fact, this is my first time delving into fixing electronics and I have 2 phones I want to repair. I got this today and saw a flaw so I wanted to make a review right out of the box.First, the good things.It is a fair thickness. It feels strong, it lays down well enough and you can see the 2 layer design that makes it look effective based on what I expect from such a mat.The size is really good too. I can only imagine you need bigger if you are using it to fix computers. I love having plenty of space so for phone repair, this size is great. I wouldnt go smaller or bigger.It also comes with a wrist strap and a wire to connect the mat to a ground, aka a screw in your electrical outlet.Now for the bad unless I am missing something. It has metal pieces on each top end of the mat for you to put the grounding wire, I forget what they call the kind of clip it uses, but there is no snap or screw on function, so the clip isnt really a clip. It doesnt even rest on it, because the weight of the wire rolls the clip off of the metal piece despite that they seem designed to fit one into the other.It is weird and I have to put a weight on the clip to keep it down. Disappointing. Still, as an amateur, I wanted something useful without spending a lot of money and not sure if other similarly priced mats do better.I am fine with the solution of putting a weight on it, but be aware of this issue.

It has a very very faint rubber smell to it when new but I have to get within inches to smell it. Unrolling it for the first time in my office and leaving it overnight did not stink up my office, I couldn't smell anything strange the next morning.The 2 snaps are both on the same long edge, which I put on the front of my desk and attach the wrist strap and ground cord to. The edges of the mat do curl up from being rolled into the box for shipment and even with laying books on each corner over night they still do not sit flat but I expect that'll improve over time.The included wrist strap cord has a 1Mohm resistance from snap to banana jack. The included grounding cord has no resistance to the banana jacks but does have a 1Mohm resistance to the bottom snap which connects to the mat itself. This should ensure that both the mat and the wrist strap both have 1Mohm resistance to ground for safety.

I received this kit Feb 25, 2020, but the ground cord was missing from the package. I have the mat and the wrist strap but no ground cord.2 stars because 1 of 3 parts is missing.

Good high quality mat. Has snaps in both corners for grounding.

Great product works very well
