Q: What’s the point of the roll up bags? Do they help with space?

When you pack up to go home from your trip, you likely won't have access to a vac. Rolling the air out saves space.

Q: Are these bags mildew and mold resistant?

Maybe. Let's manage your expectations. By "resistant" do you mean that they keep mold and mildew out always, or just most of the time? I have owned these vacuum bags from a variety of manufacturers. To date, not even one bag held it's vacuum for longer than a few months. Most lost the vacuum after a week or three. So if they are going to leak air, then there is a chance that mold and mildew can enter the bag too. I keep looking for updates to the product so they don't leak, but so far, they all seem to be the same product with different manufacturer's names on them.

Q: I have a small handheld vac pump that works with FreshSaver zipbags (they have a round, flat "seal" area). Would that work for these bags?

You don't need a pump. Just rolling the bag forces the air out. It's a one-way valve at the bottom of the bag. Couldn't be easier.
