How many inches below the ceiling should the rim be for optimal shooting? We only have a 7'-6" height in our basement, where we plan to install this.

3 feet or more clearance above the rim I recommend, but in this case that would bring the hoop down to 4.5 ft with your ceiling height. You could get away with 2.5 ft, but most shots would need to be closer to the rim

Our boys are 9 and 14 and I assume if we mount it in a stud we’ll be good. How much abuse do the surrounding walls take?

Hi there! To answer your main question, the amount of abuse the surrounding walls take it completely dependent on how aggressively basketball is played. We do sell wall pads on our site if you feel the play will be more aggressive. Also, it may be to your benefit to look at a two stud mount with one of the main players being 14. Those sets (Dura Goal, Xtreme, Ultimate) give you even more strength.
