This film is so well put together that at times I found it difficult to tell what was vintage AMG footage, and what was filmed especially for Beefcake.It tells the well-known story of Bob Mizer,founder of the Athletic Model Guild (AMG).Mizer photographed thousands of young and fit men, from his teen years right up until just before his death in 1992. The AMG compound in Los Angeles became home to many of these young drifters. The film brilliantly captures the sounds and the colours,(even the style of the curtains and the clothing of that time) and avoids being overly sentimental. Intercut with footage from AMG,are modern interviews with the photographers and models of that world,including Joe Dallessandro, Joe Leitel, Jack La Lanne, Russ Warner and Jim Lassiter. There are scenes entirely recreated for Beefcake,such as the courtroom scenes,but these work in the sense that they contribute to the story. The film does not shy away from showing the drugs,sexual favours and the darker side of the AMG story. It is a pity that no footage of Mizer himself could be included (perhaps none exists), but this is a good documentary of the era.

A rare , funny and sensitive movie that can rightly take pride of place in any gay movie collection.

Mancava alla mia collezione da tempo: un classico senza tempo, uno spaccato sociale e culturale di un'America sempre troppo puritana ed ipocrita. Da vedere per capire molte cose.

Sehr gute Dokumentation, mit schönen Fotos auch in schwarz -weiss. Einzige was ich hier etwas negativ bewerten kann, ist die Bildquqlität, aber selbst bei dieser, ist der Film zu empfehlen.
