Maybe I expect too much
I really like my Norpro kitchen scraps holder (it's not really a composter). It is well built and attractive on my kitchen counter. The filters that originally came with it became ineffective. We washed them, hoping they would work better, but that didn't help. So I threw them out and ordered several sets of these replacement filters. While waiting for them to be delivered, I continued to use the lidded bucket without the filters. It actually worked quite well. Then the filters arrived and I installed them. I quickly found that if I have something really smelly in the unit, such as onions and broccoli, after a day or two it doesn't much matter whether the filters are there or not. And the filters actually retain some of that smell after I empty and clean the unit. I will continue to use these filters until they are worn, but I might not buy new ones. I think this unit is effective because it has aeration. Before I was just using a big plastic tub with a lid and things quickly went anaerobic, which really stinks. With the holes in the lid on this unit, that doesn't happen.

Stainless Steel Composters: Why both a circular and square filter?
I have a stainless steel composter and have been using both these and the circular filters successfully, for years, or so I thought... I was wondering why this set contains both a square and circular filter, and found this info on the Norpro website, which explains the "correct" way of using the filters (square one stuffed up to the top of the dome, circular one in the lip of the lid, not touching each other. What an "a ha moment!" (It seems like the circular ones might be marketed for the ceramic countertop composters that don't have as much pontential space in the dome of the lid.)From Norpro:To Replace Filters: just pull old filters out and toss. Inside replacement packet are two filters: one square filter and one round filter. Insert the square filter first. Just push it into the lid next to the holes in the lid, using your hands. Insert the round filter second. It goes in the other part of the lid and does not touch the other filter. Just work it in with your hands. The lid does not come apart.

Product has changed and is now useless
I’ve used these for many years, but the round filter in the latest batch is now incredibly thin. The odors come right through; I was having to empty my bin every day. Best to find another brand. Some have the thicknesses of the filters listed.

These work well, but don't try to save money and not change them often...
I finally found the filters that fit properly in my Norpro compost pail. These are two-piece, charcoal-infused, filters that fit in the lid. The thicker, square piece goes in first and the round filter fits second (closest to the inside of the pail). They work well, but if you use you pail as much as we do, you will want to change these filters at least every two months.Fruit will still attract fruit flies and very wet scraps will mold if you don't empty you pail very often. My recommendation is to stock up---they are cheap; change them frequently; and most importantly---do NOT let scraps sit in this container more than 24-36 hours. With these caveats, recommended.

Just what I wanted
Rating items such as this is difficult. This item was perfectly acceptable. It was as advertised. I liked it so I gave ti a four-star rating. I don't know what it would take to rate this item five stars. That would mean that more than liking it, I love it. No, I do not love it. It completely met my expectations. It fit my compost bin as I expected it to. It appeared identical to the existing filter system. What more could I ask?

recycling products
I have been recycling and composting for several yrs. In looking for a secure container to keep my daily food scrapsin, I found a very nice stainless steel one ,along with accessories to keep my kitchen odor and fly free. I have been using the charcoal filters recommended and they work great .I also purchase the plastic bags that are biodegradeable that we use to line the container .> these are both by nordpro.I I would recomend all of these products readily as they have made composting easier .
