Works in my pfSense bare metal
I have a primary WAN and a backup WAN. This handles the swap between the two WANs when one is down. Speeds are as expected and I’ve had no issues. Price was perfect for me as I didn’t have much to spend. Just a basic PCI card so easy to install. If your using for a pfSense don’t forget to disable the ASPM setting in bios or you will have to setup interfaces every boot.

Just buy the damn thing
Put inside a 920x mini PC. Add a 8x2.5gb switch Add a Unifi U7 Pro Better firewall/router/AP reliability, speed, and concurrency than any sub $1000 appliance can provide, for a grand total of ~$440. Throw in a few moca 2.5 adaptors and you can easily spread 2.5g whole home easily. I have a fast enough Internet connection to saturate the uplink port and ~100 networked devices across the house. No issues at all with the NIC, none whatsoever. Doesn't drop like the Intel 225/226 sometimes do, so a good implementation of the chip. Auto detected in pfsense, Ubuntu, and windows. Stable ping to my nearby speedtest.net server of 16 +/- 4ms. Stays nice and cool in a tiny PC. Win. Win. Win.

Unusably poor virtual environment performance with IOMMU enabled.
Extremely poor performance in Proxmox VM. Throughput in the double digit Mbps initially, up and down, with unstable latency from ~30ms to nearly 1s. Disabled IOMMU in bios and both latency and throughput improved. Now running ~600Mb down and ~500Mb up, still not up to expectation but at least usable. If you're looking to use this in a virtual environment I would not recommend it at this point. You're going to get similar performance from a 1G 1000VT at a significantly lower price. I havent run it outside a virtual environment so I can't give an opinion on it's performance there.

Bottom line: Save yourself the headache and skip this card.
Honestly, this Intel i226-V NIC has been nothing but trouble. I tried using it with pfSense and it constantly dropped connections, threw watchdog timeout errors, and would randomly kill my WAN link until I manually reset it. I updated firmware, tried every driver and setting tweak out there, and even reinstalled pfSense from scratch, and tried 3 different motherboards with no luck. As soon as I swapped it for an older Intel i210, or a Realtek, yes a Realtek worked over the intel, everything worked perfectly. Bottom line: it just doesn’t play nice with pfSense or FreeBSD right now. Save yourself the headache and skip this card. Update, had issues with windows 11, server 2019, server 2022 and server 2025 built in drivers and intel specific drivers. This card is a flop.

Great card!
Have to manually add drivers for server 2025, but automatically installs in 2022, win 11, no prob. Card stays static, adapters don't reinstall randomly, allowing you to assign VMs to them no prob.

Great purchase for a 2.5gb Intel card. Looking at the ports with heatsink facing up, port 0 starts on the left and port 3 is on the far right.

Great value for a hard to find product
Great value for a quad 2.5 GBE network card. Fits perfectly in a micro form factor PC. Excellent for use in a firewall OS.

Proxmox killer
This quad 226 card is a nightmare to use in a Linux Proxmox OS. While it is detected correctly and the link speed is 2.5Gb, the actual performance is totally inconsistent, stuttering intermittent hangs. Even pings on the same switch reached 1000ms. It’s all caused by the way the 226 chipset handle interrupts. It floods the cpu with interrupts crippling performance. The 226 was never meat to be used in a quad interface. Absolutely avoid if you are doing any type of virtualization.

PCIe timeouts causing high ping latency
Out of the box this was unusable. I was getting 50-500ms pings with this device to a directly connected device (should have been < 1ms). There was a telltale linux kernel log: # pcieport 0000:07:00.0: invalid VPD tag 0xff (size 0) at offset 0; assume missing optional EEPROM The GLOTRENDS card seems to lack a configuration EEPROM (cost cutting/quality?), causing PCIe timing issues and completion timeouts under the motherboard’s default power/perf settings. This is why 50ms+ of latency were added to pings which should be sub millisecond. I have tried forcing the pci slot to PCI3 speed in the bios, and added pci=pcie_bus_perf to the linux boot parameters. but these didn't shift the needle. There seems to be a fundamental flaw with the pci switch in this device. If I find any workarounds I'll update this review. further notes: The description states PCIE3 however in the model I received the chip they're using to switch between the 4 i226v chips is only a PCIE2 chip. 07:00.0 PCI bridge: Pericom Semiconductor PI7C9X2G608GP PCIe2 6-Port/8-Lane Packet Switch

Terrible performance
Bought this to replace my 2 x 2.5gbe Realtek card. The performance is terrible. Fresh installation of Debian trixie and I can only get less than 10MBps. Pinging local network I get high latency over 800ms sometimes over 1000ms.
