For some reason, the bulb manufacturers recently made their 40 watt appliance bulbs longer. They won't work with old lava lamps. Mine is from the seventies, for example, and the bottle part will actually sit ON the larger bulb which I didn't think was safe, and the bottle doesn't seat securely in the base because of it. These bulbs are a lot shorter, so I gave them a try. Not only do they fit, but they seem to be just a little warmer than my old bulb, as the lava movement is a little more active. If you're a fan of old Lava Lites, and a lot of collectors are--stock up on these bulbs while you can.

First of the four bulbs burnt out in two weeks time. On the second bulb now. It may have been a lightning storm that caused a power surge to be fair.

I bought 4 bulbs in April 2022. I reordered March 2026. Perhaps some bulbs are failing prematurely because people are not using gloves to install them. I learned long ago with car headlight bulbs that gloves insure longer life. I believe the same advice applies to all "hard duty" bulbs.

Good product and size. No problem with bulb so far, a little smaller than previous bulb but very bright. Would recommend product.
