The Book of Perfectly Perilous Math: 24 Death-Defying Challenges for Young Mathematicians (Irresponsible Science)

Happy 9 Year Old
My 9 year old is really enjoying this book. He likes logic games and math, and seems pleased with the gruesome scenarios ;)I think it’s fun that the book is designed so the kids do their calculations in the book and then compare them to the explanation of the answer. If you have a kid who likes math then this is probably a moderate level workbook.

Fantastically engaging + great base for any escape room
I could see using the premise in any of these stories to use as the basis for an escape room. I love the extension lessons that incorporate science lessons. I've already passed this on to my gen ed math teacher hoping we can dive into some of these; super awesome!:-D

If there were 50 of these books, I would buy all of them
This book is a must read for every parent, teacher and child who loves science and math. And if you don't love science and math yet, you will after reading this book. I hope the author earns so much money with this book, that he is allowed to write another 50 of the same kind. These math puzzles are so incredibly thoughtful, entertaining and delighting - even my three year old wants to do math, after looking at the illustrations and hearing the funny notes.Thank you Sean and the publisher for undertaking this work and creating such a delightful inspiring book. I think if our bookstores would be filled with books like this, America's future in science and engineering would look even brighter. For everyone wondering about the impact of math problems on a child's development of analytical skills, I highly recommend Andrei Toom's paper "Word problems in Russia and America".

Have great fun with math!
I heard this author on National Public Radio one morning and decided to order the book as a Christmas gift for the children of a couple of friends of ours who were between the ages of 8 and 14. The book presents really fun scenarios that require a mathematical solution. Some of these problems were quite challenging for me, even as an adult, but I was proud of myself for remembering enough of my past math classes to work out almost all of the answers. I do not have children, but my husband and I thought it would be really fun to work on the problems together with your child. (I don't know how it would work with more than one child at one time...you would have to try that). The young man to whom we gave the book loved it and his brothers enjoyed it, too!

Some Serious Inaccuracies...
This book is so unique and creative. Needless to say, as a middle level math teacher, I was excited to find something to ignite a spark in my students' minds. However, there are numerous mathematical inaccuracies in this book. For instance, the author uses the words "odds" and "probability" interchangeably. In my state's 8th grade math standards, the students are required to not only know the difference between those two concepts, but also must be able to convert between them. They are NOT the same thing. Also, the author claims that 2/3 of 75 and 3/4 is 50 and 1/4. It's actually 50 and 1/2, making the solution to the problem much different than how it's desribed. I've had this book for 24 hours now and have already found those mistakes. I'm just glad it was only $5.

Brownie Points from Principal
This book is amazing. I teach 7th grade math and it is teaching my students problem solving in a fun way. It also lists some of the mathematical practices (of Common Core) in the index for easy common core alignment. This book even scored me brownie points with the department head and principal at my school. I will def recommend to any other middle school math teachers who are struggling to help students prepare for new Common Core Assessments

Great for math-shy also!
I’ve seen a lot of reviews that say their math whiz kids love this. Wanted to add that I use this book with my 12 and 10 year olds boys who are decidedly not in love with math, and they also really enjoy it. It gets them to think creatively and we love the hands-on experiments that come after the problem. A great break from worksheets! Highly recommend this book and all the others by this author.
