A must for Cammy fans, general Street Fighers fans will probably appreciate too.

This is a Street Fighter Manga that is not really well known around. The reason is probably that when UDON translated the main Street Fighter mangas to distribute them in the West they didn't do so for this one, who was already translated back in the '90s by Viz. Actually before UDON did its thing this manga was the only Japanese Street Fighter manga to have been released in the West (aside from the Street Fighter 2 Manga who went through colouring and flipping, whereas this manga has only been flipped for its English release). In any case the fact that UDON didn't rerelease this one is a bit of a shame and certainly shouldn't discourage people potentially interested in getting this piece of Street Fighter expanded universe. The author of the manga is Masahiko Nakahira, a mangaka who worked on other well-known Street Fighter mangas like Sakura Ganbaru and Ryu Final, and who actually influenced the videogame series by creating characters like Karin Kanzuki (now pretty well known after her inclusion in Street Fighter V) and Evil Ryu, and also other elements that Capcom incorporated into canon from Nakahira's mangas. The story is pretty obviously centered around the character of Cammy White, the amnesiac British special agent with unclear ties to the criminal syndacate Shadaloo (Shadowloo in the translation), who's trying to discover her origins while working together with her comrades at Delta Red and the people she meets on her missions. Since people interested in this probably already know about the backstory of the main character I'll make it brief: this manga was originally created in 1994, back when most of Street Fighter lore simply didn't exist and Cammy's own backstory was little more than "she's amnesiac and once worked for Shadaloo", no Dolls and no Killer Bee yet until Alpha came around (the name "Killer Bee" was actually another of Nakahira's ideas, introduced in Sakura Ganbaru), this means that the origin story that this manga has for Cammy is inevitably quite different from the one that is known nowadays.Cammy's character too is a little different: while modern portrayals tend to have her being mostly serious and focused on her mission this manga portrays a Cammy that is more easygoing and funny (while also turning serious when the story demands it), in fact more similar to what little could be perceived of the Cammy's character by the Street Fighter II victory quotes. This is a change that I actually liked as it allowed to see a different side of the character that isn't really seen around these days. The story is divided in six chapters (plus an extra chapter that isn't in the book but that can be found online), and even though each chapter advances a little the general plotline all of the chapters feel relatively episodic and stand-alone (with the exception of chapters 2 and 3 that are a two-parts story). The whole thing feels overall pretty similar to the way Sakura Ganbaru is also structured.Other Street Fighter characters that appear in the story are mainly Guile, who will collaborate with Cammy, and Vega, who will try to bring her back to Shadaloo (this I think is actually the first time Cammy and Vega are established as rivals, which is something that SF Alpha and SF V will both embrace), while Dhalsim, Fei Long and M. Bison make briefer appearances (M. Bison in particular had a small but memorable moment toward the ending, which reminded me of Juri's backstory, a character from the much more recent Street Fighter IV). A nice break from Ryu and Chun-Li's endless protagonism in my opinion.I think the art and the action are also very good, the author loves to go gradually through each of Cammy's move from the game as she learns them to defeat her various opponents. If I had to find a flaw in this manga it would be in the tone the story has, which tries to balance the fact that Cammy's own story and the military/criminal conspiracy setting are relatively dark and need a more serious approach from time to time while also adding comedy and gags to the all thing, the end result is that in the end I felt that Cammy's character could have been explored much more deeply but it looked like that story just preferred to go for a more lighthearted take on things (not that the manga is devoid of darker or serious moments though).Overall however I really enjoyed this manga, if anything because I'm a massive Cammy fan and probably couldn't but like it. In the end it's a manga adaptation to a fighting game series, it's aimed at fans and if you don't go in expecting the best the manga industry has to offer then you'll find a series of nice stories with good action, some cool moments and some corny moments. If you're a Cammy fan like me you'll probably love it and this manga is something I can definitely recommend to a fan, if you're a general Street Fighter enthusiast then I'd recommend this manga to you because of how it shows the earlier development of the characters when the series was still young, how the plot points that were eventually expanded upon by the games were treated in the expanded universe, and because it is after all a nice collectible from the nineties.
