A treasure!
This month celebrates the 80th anniversary of Britain's longest-running comic'The Beano', and the people at D.C. Thompson & Co have really pushed the boat out with their ''80 Years of Fun' box set which will delight fans new and old, and provides a gift for collectors. The retail priceis £25.00, and considering the amount of fabulous content inside, this is a snip.Housed in a smart black box with Dennis the Menace gracing it's cover in gold, here is what you get:1. A 100 page bookazine called '80 Years of Fun' (which you can buy separately for £6.99) which provides a proper history of the comic, it's characters, and the people behind the scenes like the editors and artists from the very first issue to the present day. This is one for the adults to enjoy as well as it's packed with information (written in a way that isn't pitched at kids but isn't stuffy either) and rare content, just as much it is with illustrations. It focuses on the following issues of the comic below, and is the perfect companion to these, as it provides all the backstory.2. Eight beautiful reprints of landmark issues, 1. The very first issue (1938), 2. The first issue to sell over a million copies (1945), 3. Dennis the Menace's first appearance (1951), 4. The first 'new look' issue for the Sixties (1960), 5. The first to announce Dennis and Gnasher fan club (1976), 6. An issue featuring Gnasher's infamous disappearance storyline (1986), 7. The final issue artist that Jim Petrie drew Minnie the Minx for (2001), and no.8 is issue 3800 (2015) which provided a record breaking number. It was wonderful to read these issues in their entirety, and it gives everyone the chance to reunite (or be introduced to) with old pals like Lord Snooty, Roger the Dodger, The 3 Bears, Calamity James, Baby Face Finlayson and some much lesser-known characters who nevertheless provided their generation with plenty of laughs. The text stories of the early issues were very well written, beautifully illustrated, and I enjoyed them very much, although they probably wouldn't be as appreciated as much with today's children who are used to lots of other things to keep them entertained. I was delighted on a personal level to see the 2001 issue again, as this was published when I was 9 and at the height of my love for 'The Beano', and I remembered every strip.3. Four A6 artwork prints of 'Beano' annuals dated 1942, 1968, 1969 and 1988.4. An A4 print of Dennis the Menace in the Sixties.5. A replica of Dennis the Menace's Fan Club pack with the two badges housed in a smart wallet.6. A replica of a Gnasher Snapper which came as a free gift with the comic.7. An A1 doubled-sized poster with virtually every character that made some impact over the last eighty years. As a limited edition, I recommend that you don't delay in purchasing your copy of this superb box set which provides a fitting tribute to a national treasure. I found mine in WHSmith and I'm delighted with it. I know that 'Beano: 80 Years of Fun Box Set' is something I will treasure.
