:) Understand your confusion. Let's clear things up. IF you are using the burner for incense sticks - you put a little sand in the bottom to help hold the sticks up straight. The sticks would be put through the screen and into the sand to hold the sticks up. IF you are burning resin incense you would use the screen to place your charcoal on. Light the charcoal and then pour a small amount of resin incense on top. The incense burner in both manners will catch the ash from either the sticks or the charcoal/resin. Hello, you need the charcoal to make the incense burn, you can place it in the bottom of the (Again SMALL) burner (But even though it is small a "round" of charcoal fits perfect.) and then put the incense on top of it there, or you can take the screen, flip it over (It makes a little curve if you do that) then put the charcoal and the incense on top of it there. I found that for me, its better just to put it under the screen and inside the burner, because if I have to go somewhere suddenly I can take the whole thing with tongs and dump the charcoal and incense in the toilet to put it out, as I am sure you know Charcoal burns for a long time, and this things gets VERY hot (You can easily burn yourself on it if not careful), and you do not want to leave your house with this going if I was you. unfortunately all the charcoal will have some smoke. It is not a toxic smoke as these charcoal are different than the ones used on an outside grill. We usually recommend either Three Kings or Swift Lite
