That being said, this album is old school BAD A$$mpunk rock! I mean old school punk rock with grit, guts, and attitude in the vein of bands such as the Minutemen, The Descendents, Circle Jerks, The Adolescents, TSOL, Teen Idles, Minor Threat, and State of Alert, MDC and The Dicks. A sound that hasn t seen a new release put out in at least 15 -20 years. I was introduced to punk rock with this style of hard hitting music and wish that there was more of it around today.I can only imagine a Spears show as an explosion of high energy with a huge pit extending from the front of the stage out the back door. Even sitting at my computer listening to this album it gets my blood pumping 100 mph and makes me want to bust some s**t up. This is actually one of the few albums that made me think of my old friends I haven t seen in years and want to tell them to get this when it comes out. The more and more I listen to this album, the more and more I m convinced it is going to be a top five album of 2009. I pretty much love all the songs on Shove , if you can t already tell by my love-fest of a review. If his album was a cereal it would be Rice Krispy s because it snap, crackles, and pops with high energy & attitude from the minute you open the box. PS...... It might be that this album is really f'n good because The Spears feature members of punk bands such as; Down By Law, DRI, Pink Lincolns, & Hated Youth. --punkrockreview.orgThe Spears Shove Supergroups are very common these days, actually most members from various bands join together and create separate bands or side projects just for fun or to see what could possibly emerge from their minds. Getting to my point, The Spears, who feature members of D.R.I., Hated Youth, Down By Law, and Pink Lincolns, have finally released their fifteen frantic, 80 s style punk rock songs to the public. Shove begins with short attention span songs that are fast, assertive and raw, then the songs gradually lengthen as they get crafted with more instrumental work and solos. The guitar riffs range from classic punk rock to subtle crossover thrash style to a Down By Law approach, gritty, pop punk. Artificial harmonies show themselves in some choruses, making way for backup vocals overtop of Chris Barrows snotty voice, as seen in Upset Down , which shows very close similarities to The Adolescents with vocal/guitar melodic jumps. The album creates an atmosphere that could go as far back as the early 80 s and the underground hardcore punk scene that erupted almost thirty years ago. Even though there s a handful of bands trying to recreate the old school sound, The Spears already have a very sharp edge on them with all the experience from within their roster; looks like the two years of creating Shove has paid off. --Waytooloud.com
