Rookie Yearbook One

A Handbook for the Angsty Teen Girl
For the year that it has been in existence, Rookie has pretty much been my bible. It's as close as you can get to having a bunch of really cool and experienced people give you advice in person. The print format takes the best articles from Rookie's September 2011 to May 2012 issues and compiles them together with a bunch of additional goodies. This is not your ordinary teen magazine, topics covered can reach from outer space to Saved by the Bell to advice on dating and sex. Articles concerning the 'perfect bikini body' or '10 steps to make him notice you' are nowhere to be found here, instead Rookie tackles these issues head-on and analyzes why teen girls stress about those subjects anyway. Each article can be read several time without getting boring, especially the more personal recollections. In addition to the fantastic writing, Rookie also has an impeccable eye for design. The Photography is always incredible and creative. Fashion and Makeup are covered in a fun way with confidence being the only requirement. The new layouts made especially for the book are also incredibly stylish without detracting from the text.Probably the best thing about having Rookie in physical format is that now I can carry it with me and secretly read it in class while pretending to do homework, just what I need to get me through high school.

Even if you are 56
If you are, like me, a 56 year old feminist, I just want you to know that you are NOT too old for this yearbook. It has great stuff--an interview with John Waters! David Sedaris! Wonderful pictures, lessons on how to bitchface, Lena Dunham, how to do mod eye make up, awesome stickers. Anna Faris has the best advice for surviving high school: Lay Low.Oh, and lots of very bright and insightful writing by some powerful young women, women like us. No, we aren't teen age girls anymore but we will forever be trying to untangle the knot that was adolescence. Still tear up when hearing Adele's Someone Like You when you're alone in the car? Still secretly drawn to glitter? Still try on those platforms at TJ Maxx when no one is looking? This book is for you.And a word to the publishers, activate the "look inside" function--I think if people could see the table of contents they would get really interested.

Rookie Yearbook One
I bought this book after seeing an interview with the author and Stephen Colbert. I intend to give it to my granddaughter as a gift. She will be 14 very soon, and I believe she will love this yearbook. I was very impressed with Tavi Gevinson on The Colbert Report. Often, adults can't handle him, but she stood her ground and presented herself very well. I am sure my granddaughter will enjoy the yearbook and find it useful.

Rookie Yearbook One
This book takes my breath away, I can't think of any accurate way to describe this book. I love this book and now think of Tavi as a close friend. Not everyone will like this book, it applies to the open minded, free thinking, coming of age feminist who might not be sure of who they are. This book has helped me tremendously and inspires me everyday. This is the best $25 I have ever spent, and can't wait for the second one. If you have any entrust in buying this book do it, and if you don't like what there is to say every page is very beautiful so you can just look at the pages.

Being Unbiasedly Honest Here
I am a teenage girl who has been reading Rookie online since the very beginning. Naturally, when it was announced that there would be a hard copy format of Rookie containing a Meadham Kirchhoff paper crown, a flexidisc, stickers and more I decided that this should be something I should own. When my copy finally came I can say a was thoroughly disappointed to see that the paper crown, while being perforated for easy assembly, had to be cut out with scissors and while being pretty and cute, may have turned out better if I had drawn and cut it out myself, the flexidisc contained two songs and is very easily warped, there is only one sheet of stickers, so few to the extent where I am not even sure what I would do with them for fear of using them all, and I'm not quite sure what the "more" is, what they state in the description describes every extra feature included, so I'm not sure why the "and more" is written there. The articles, while being interesting, are all things that can be read online for free. It's pretty, yes, but not worth 20 bucks in my mind. If you have been reading Rookie all along it can serve as a sort of keepsake/memorabilia book, and is fun just to flip through and to just say you have, but overall my friends and I have been pretty disappointed with our purchases. Yes, Rookie has some amazing articles, but save yourself the 20 washingtons and the trees it takes to make all the paper for these things and just stick to the digital. (All of the two songs from the flexidisc can be found online as well) and maybe invest in some lisa frank stickers and some markers and paper to make your own paper crown/get more stickers for less than $20.

My daughter reads and re-reads this
I got this for my 13 yr old. she is now a big fan of the book and the site. I really like that it gives her perspective on her experiences in a fun and informative way. It doesn't talk to her like she is completely an adult but it doesn't treat her like a child either. Some of the things written about may not be comfortable for everyone, unfortunately I think they are what most people experience in society at that age and slightly older. It helps to hear that it gets better from someone other than MOM!

Perfect for older teenage girls.
I bought this for my 17 year old daughter and she has really enjoyed it. This is perfect for girls who know that they are more than just another pretty face. So much media geared towards teenage girls focuses on looks and how to attract a boy. This book is a compilation of blogs by the author and is fun but really focuses on the role women play in our society. It shows young women how to realize they can make a difference in the world.

What is there not to like?
I bought this because I've been wanting the yearbook ever since I found one sitting on my friend's shelves. Low on money, I didn't want to pay $30 for the book. When I found this book selling for $20, I felt like the book seemed more afforadable, so I went for the purchase.Lots of teen spirit in this yearbook. I can't wait to finish this big fat Rookie Mag goodness.

Such a beautiful memento
As a fan of Rookie for years, Tavi made something really special with the website, and after hearing of it's closure I thought I'd invest in the 4 rookie yearbooks as a memento as she's able to create the same feeling and look to it. Mostly a selection of articles from each issue collated into a book.

A teenage dream
I had been a fan of RookieMag.com for almost 2 years before I finally got round to purchasing this book, and I immediately ordered the 2nd Yearbook after the first had arrived... it is just gorgeous! Actually having all the artwork, photo shoots and articles as something tangible in my hands really enhances the experience. The articles are witty, intelligent, written BY teenage girls FOR teenage girls. They tackle everything from feminism, privilege and sexual abuse to midnight snacking, mastering the "b*tchface" and learning not to care what people think of you. For those of you who are parents buying this for a younger teenager, there IS a significant chunk of sex talk and education etc. in here, but it is all very intelligently discussed and cleverly put together, and Rookie is far better than the glossy 'teenage girl' magazines when it comes to body image, sex and contemporary/personal issues. However, intelligent content aside, my personal favourites were the cute free gifts (stickers, a paper crown and a flexidisc) and the beautiful photoshoots. I am so glad I discovered Rookie when I did. BUY THIS BOOK :)

Unusual
I loved this book and wanted to keep it for myself - that's why I rate it highly - but I deemed it too mature for a 12 year old. I think it depends on the individual child. The book is very well done and interesting just not the right fit for my niece.
