Yes it can. I used the pad purchased here on Amazon. The part is "Astro Pneumatic Tool 4606 6-Inch PU Velcro Backing Pad". Works great.

The answer is no. This pad is a rigid pad that is designed for heavy grinding discs, 24 grit, 36 grit. There is not enough flat surface area to allow for an adhesive to stick to this pad nor will an adhesive sanding disk hold up to the power and speed of this great tool. You may try to find a 6 in rubber pad that bolts to the 5/8 x 11 spindle, but I don't think you will find that an adhesive style sanding paper will work well on this tool. Hope this helps.

Q: What size air compressor is required to run this sander effeciently?

I use a 26-gallon Husky running on a standard 115 V connection. Your question specifies "efficiently" but I don't know what type of use that would mean. With a 115 V compressor you probably can't run the tool continuously. Give the compressor time to catch up, and take a break every 10-15 minutes so as not to overheat it. I sanded a compact car with this combination and it went very well, with breaks as mentioned.-- RocDoc
