Bought this unit to replace a 12,000 BTU window unit which got 'electrocuted' [fried]; electrical outlet burned out (wiring) leaving me with no air for a month. I'm in a dry boxed in apt facing the west, gets baked in the sun all day. Just received & installed the portable a/c tonight. So far I'm COLD (it's set at 72) on high fan it has a comfortable noise level, is MORE tolerable than the window unit & the operation hum isn't unpleasant (this building carries sound & vibrations cause it's so papery thin). The window a/c was much more hassle than this. It is a beast!! It's a big machine, but very manouverable, much more so than my 8,000 btu Frigidaire portable unit installed in my bedroom 2 years ago which is so annoying, has a jet engine whine & sounds like a mini bar fridge when it's cooling (constantly running!!). I am sincerely considering selling my smaller portable at some point & getting another Whynter (the 8,000 btu) for my bedroom!! 1 day delay in shipping (Purolator) due to the weight limit for their drivers. Only select persons can bring it up 2 flights of stairs (2 story walkup apt building). I was told they are authorized to leave it in the main foyer. I would've been STUCK (no dolly to haul it upstairs!) There was a slight pinging sound when I first started the unit, like something inside was loose. Oddly enough it lasted for about 2 mintues then nothing. I was worried something was loose, though it was solidly packed (inside a box with another box) This lasted almost 5 years. Began control panel malfunction after removing the drain plug for a routine draining (despite being self condensing they fill up with water & inevitably it shuts down the machine without much warning. A beeping & tiny red flashing light on the power button, STOP flashing on the digital display). Drained it again, started running again but the compressor ran continually causing it to freeze up. Plus it wouldn't switch formats (a/c to dehumidify to fan). After nonstop run arounds trying to diagnose & get it running as my apt was turning into a steam bath (30 F outside & 82 inside) I ultimately had to shove it in a corner & purchase a Frigidaire window unit. I had to go 11 days without air conditioning in some extreme heat due to all the malfeasance with the Whynter unit & can't get a technician, repairs or parts. I'd never again be talked into buying portable. It couldn't cool my apartment I was always uncomfortable & it certainly doesn't last!! I've had window units for 15+ years

I've had quite the journey with this unit! We live in a two story un-airconditioned house, and for years our summers have been miserable. After figuring out how to get a unit to work in one of our upstairs bedrooms (my office), we settled on this Whynter unit. It was easy enough to set up, and for the month that it ran, it kept our upstairs cool-ish. I wouldn't expect it to fully chill our upstairs as it is a big space, but it kept the temperature at a level where we were comfortable, which is a minor miracle. The unit is powerful and not overly loud. Now, the journey! After a month and a half our unit started making horrible noises, and it became clear something was very wrong. I worked with the support team, and eventually sent the unit back for replacement since we were in the warranty period. Jof, our Whynter rep, was very helpful and communicative. The only issue I had at first was that I didn't think I'd kept the box (we usually break them down quickly) and so figuring out how to ship this back seemed like a fools errand. Luckily my wife had stored it out of the way, and once I had it repackaged, it was easy to get it returned. My dearest advice, dear reader: SAVE THE BOX AND ALL OF THE SHIPPING MATERIAL FOR AS LONG AS YOU CAN! Seriously. If something goes wrong you're going to want this box in particular. It is NOT easy to find boxes online which would work to ship this unit. So thanks to eh Whynter team we're back up and running, and no longer dying from the summer heat!

Product arrived damaged, sold with US plug in 110v and 220V to EU plug adaptor. Product does not work when plugged with the provided adapter. Does not start at all. Requested a refund, waiting for shipping instructions as this is a very heavy product to return.

09/04/2020: Waaaahhhh....it died tonight after 7 years, 1 month of providing us with lovely, cold air! Last night, it sounded like the bearings were going (DH tried to explain to me) so I ordered a replacement to have on hand. Coincidence? Was the poor thing dying and heard me order it's backup/replacement so it just relaxed and left us? I'm not kidding, less than one hour after ordering the new unit, it suddenly went quiet. :(. The timing sucks because the new one won't be here until next Sunday, so it's going to be a looooong, hooottttt weeeeeeek. Today was 114 and tomorrow is predicted to be only slightly cooler. Drat! UPDATE 07/10/2018: WORKING WONDERFULLY after five years in Los Angeles heat! We've been running it 24 hrs/day for 8 days in a row, set at 75 - temps hit 114 two days in a row, high 90s past three days... I LOVE THIS! I'm attaching the photos that I sent to Whynter to show the crud I'm talking about that I wanted (and did) clean and it now runs like new! Ahhh...cold air! UPDATE Aug. 1, 2016: FANTASTIC CUSTOMER SERVICE FROM WHYNTER!! Waah, four days ago my unit started behaving erratically. It actually felt like it was outputting heat from somewhere while cool air was still coming from the vents. The temperature of the "cooled" air had also been going up. Then, it began leaking water from the area where the back of the shell meets the bottom of the unit. The reservoir was nowhere near full, I'd already emptied it, but tipped it again and a very little bit came out while the unit was still leaking water profusely where I described. Weeeel, while I don't recommend this and my DH is an electronics guy, we took it apart to see what was going on. #1 The Intake air tube had sucked up two paper receipts that traveled down to the base and blocked 98% of the incoming air. I emailed Whynter asking for instructions on how to open the unit (after spending over an hour Googling and Youtubing for a service manual) and was blown away that I got a wonderful response that same Sunday! The CS rep not only sent me a direct link to an item I asked about, but they also included a document that had the exact information and visuals showing where the screws were. AMAZING CUSTOMER SERVICE. Once we found the hidden screws and then ran out to buy a ridiculously long screwdriver to access them, we got the shell off and found blankets of grey matter (ew) covering the fins/coils. Turns out the leak was coming from midway up the unit because the little drain there was clogged with ew and it was running down the inside. A thorough cleaning later, we're back up and running and cooling down. While working the room was 87.3 and it's now slowly cooling. The air temp coming out is now down to 64 from 85 a few minutes ago and will continue to fall hopefully to where it was a few days ago at 56 and very chilly. We set it at 77. Air is coming out at 56 - deeeelightful! SO, I wonder if some of complaints might be from a result of not performing basic maintenance like cleaning the freaking filter (I do it daily, I know where we live) and keeping on top of draining the unit. Some people also may not realize that the compressor STOPS when the reservoir is full and needs to be drained. The fan continues to run, but the air doesn't cool. The issue of the person blaming this unit for his melted outlet: isn't that usually caused by arcing within the outlet itself and has nothing to do with whatever is plugged into it? Inside the outlet, if the screw that holds a wire is loose, it can cause arcing and intense heat/fire. I've had the same outlet issue using my 4cup coffee maker. Look it up, google for melted outlet - NOT the fault of this unit. UPDATE Oct. 22, 2015: FANTASTIC! We have heat waves here over 100 and this keeps me cool. A bit on the noisy side, have to turn the TV up quite loud, but holycow - small price to pay for physical comfort. Remember to clean your filters and check the condensation to drain when needed. It does make a difference. SUGGESTION 1: make it easier to drain. I tilt the unit forward, slip in a sheetcake pan with newspapers, then a towel on top, then tile the unit backwards for it to drain. When nothing more comes out, I again tilt it forward so I can slide the pan out, then return the unit to upright. UPDATE Aug 30, 2013: Wheeee! We still love this air conditioner. On the window panel with holes for the tubes: The holes are quite close to each other than (I think) it would be better if they could be separated much more space. Having the hot air flowing OUT just a couple of inches next to the INtake doesn't make sense to me. I wish there was a way to have options of multiple holes or sliding adjustable (we could cover with plastic or cardboard or something). The unit in box is over 100 lbs. I suggest having a furniture mover or dolly ready to move it where you want until you get it out of the box, then the unit itself rolls. Cut the packing strips Open the top of the box to remove the shallow box that contains the window fitting, the hose fittings and the hoses. Lift the shipping box up off the unit. The unit inside is already upright. CHECK INSIDE ONE OF THE HOSES and you'll find the manual, remote control with battery, a carbon filter and instructions for installing the filter and a little bag of screws.
