I do not know what costed wire is unless u mean coated wire. The thing is what is the actual thickness of the wire with coating you are using. If is less than the thickness of 10-gauge wire and you are not concerned about damaging the coating, then should work. Give it a try and see if you are satisfied.

Q: Can I use this on coated wire?

It can be used on coated wire as long as you strip the insulation off first.

Q: Do I need the tool for snugging up 14 gauge wire for a blackberry trellis? Also how to get the release pin?

I did not use any tool to snug up the wire just brute physical strength with pliers or you could use a vise grip. The tool available to do this would however work very well. 'The release pin came with the set of gripples I bought. But if one does not come with the gripples you buy; you could always use a straighten paper clip or the pin that is used to open bathroom door knobs after being unintentionally locked.

Q: can this be used with 1/8" galvenized threaded cable?

Will be tight, but yes. I just used it with 1/8" stainless
