I LOVE this backpack! I'd been thinking of getting a good backpack for awhile now, mainly for day hikes, but thought it would be great if I could find something that would work for everyday office use and such as well. My problem at the time wasn't a lack of quality backpacks to choose from, but the fact that my laptop (a 10lb gaming rig) was too big to fit in any of them. So, I splurged a bit with my Christmas shopping, and bought a smaller laptop strictly for writing; something far more portable and less likely to kill someone if it accidentally fell on their head. Well, of COURSE that meant I had to have a new bag for it, too, right? *nod* Of course. This lovely backpack was one of the Prime early-whatever deals the same day I ordered the laptop. I was intrigued right away by the brand; like many others, I've had my share of Swiss Army Knives in the past and loved them. A backpack by the same company, I thought, was sure to be high quality and have lots of pockets and compartments for just lots of different stuff and things. Imagine my delight on checking out the description and photos and realizing that I was right on with that thought. Okay, one tiny little complaint here -- the backpack does NOT have fun pull-out bits like the knives do. *sigh* No tent, no fishing pole, no portable shower or blankets or ANYTHING. (I was secretly hoping to be surprised with something technically useful, but only sometimes; some backpack-y version of the knives' tooth picks. Perhaps a cup holder? Or a slinky that really works. Alas.) However, it does have this awesome little pouch inside for your phone or MP3 player, with a hole above to stick your headphones through the top so you can listen to music or audiobooks while hiking without worrying about snagging the cord on a passing branch. That's pretty awesome. Fast forward a few days to the backpack's delivery: It arrived the day after my new laptop, so I was able to test the fit right away. I mean, I knew it would fit; I read the description. But there's just something satisfying about the moment the two separate things you bought to go together actually GO together, and fit beautifully. I dunno; maybe I'm just weird that way. Anyway. My new laptop fits in this backpack perfectly, and I like the velcro strap to keep it more snug to avoid falling-out accidents if I happened to unzip the laptop compartment at an awkward angle. I mean, you never expect that to happen, but who knows? I've seen enough adventure movies to be somewhat (mentally, at least) prepared to find myself strapped to the saddle of a rampaging tyrannosaurus, with the Secret Words of Calming to sedate the slavering beast conveniently written down … on my laptop. I'd definitely want that extra velcro security strap while opening my backpack then. Because we all know what would happen if I didn't, and nobody wants to hear me sing lullabies which might or might work as well as the Secret Words of Calming. I digress. I have yet to use this backpack for hiking, but will be testing it very soon and I'm sure I'll be thrilled with it. It's been great so far for office jaunts and a weekend away with a friend. THERE ARE SO MANY POCKETSES. I don't even have enough stuff and things to fill all the pockets, but that just means I have ample room for collecting pretty rocks and bits of moss and keys to secret treasure vaults and stuff on my adventures. 10/10 would recommend for office geeks, laptop wizards, and wanderlust-stricken hobbits braving creepy forests.

Sturdy but bulky and heavy I purchased the SwissGear 1900 ScanSmart 17” Laptop Backpack in Grey Heather, but ultimately returned it. The bag is well-constructed and sturdy, with plenty of compartments and the ScanSmart feature for laptops, which is convenient. However, the backpack itself is heavy and bulky, even when empty. Adding a laptop or other items would have made it difficult to carry comfortably, so it didn’t work for my needs. Overall, it’s a good-quality backpack, but if you’re looking for something lightweight and easy to carry, this might not be the best choice.

hoping that it might be bigger than my old, biggest Swiss gear back pack. not so. compartments not as useful as my old bag. hardware on this bag might better, and the chest strap is back. that's important. like the new gray color. I'm going to find away to use this new guy , because the chest strap is back. I've been using Swiss Gear back packs daily for at least 20 years. I think this new one is number 4.
