## Overview

Howard Products Restor-A-Finish in Dark Oak is a 473mL finish-penetrating solution designed to restore and blend minor scratches, blemishes, and discolorations on finished wood surfaces. With 9 color options and a simple wipe-on, wipe-off process, it removes heat rings, water marks, sun fade, and oxidation without stripping the original finish, saving time and avoiding full refinishing.

## Description

In 1969, Douglas G. Howard set out to solve this dilemma: how can you eliminate blemishes in wood finishes and restore the original color and luster without removing any of the existing finish? Unable to find an answer at his local hardware store, he went to work in his garage to create his own product. His goal was to make something that would be much more than a surface treatment, yet nothing like a stripper or a refinisher. The key was to develop a formula that could clean and polish the surface, penetrate the finish with stain, and leave the original finish intact. The end result was Restor-A-Finish, Doug Howard's first in what would become a complete line of wood care products. For over 40 years, Howard's Restor-A-Finish has been a standard in the antique industry. Because Restor-A-Finish preserves the original wood finish it also helps preserve its authenticity and value, whereas stripping the finish may literally strip the piece of its value. Almost any existing wood tone, from a Birdseye Maple to a Jacobean, can be closely matched using one of the nine available finish colors. Trying it on just about everything with a traditional wood finish, antique dealers, refinishers, and homemakers have found it to be a safer and easier alternative to stripping and refinishing. Scratches, oxidation, white heat rings, watermarks, smoke damage, and sun fade simply disappear.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Which color should I get if I have dark expresso color wood?**
A: Their Ebony Brown shade is ideal for modern Espresso finishes. I've used it to dramatic and fantastic effect. Great stuff!

**Q: what to use to clean wood first and then after the application of restor a finish**
A: I dust first. If it's really bad, I use Howard OrangeOil Wood Polish first. The Restore-A-Finish actually cleans as you use it.

**Q: Would you recommend this color for a teak dining table? I'm not sure if the other finishes would work better.**
A: I wouldn't, I would go darker on teak. This stuff does not really add any color like a stain would. I have used golden oak for kitchen oak cabinets, and dark oak for 25 year old Minwax 230 Early American stained oak trim, and cherry for an antique cherry dininig room table and they all did not "darken" anything. This stuff isn't a stain and it should only restore any mis-colored spots, if its a dark teak -I would use the dark oak.

**Q: Where can I see samples of the colors of this product?**
A: On the website

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Positive Review to Offset the Negative
*by M***O on 10 January 2022*

I've used this product on countless pieces of furniture with damaged finishes, and it works, but you have to realize a couple points about what it works with and doesn't and the process needed to use it effectively. First, I've found this works with solid wood or something with a real wood veneer, and a stain finish of some sort. If your wood has polyurethane, wax, polish, or anything of the sort, it's not going to work well unless that's removed first. This product needs to "dissolve" and blend the finish already there, it will not really add color. It is not a stain, so the reviews saying there's no color to it are accurate. But this is why it works so well. Stain can be difficult to match and will leave the finish uneven if you spot stain it. Second, the application is simple. I take 0000 steel wool, put some of this on it, and gently rub the spot and some of the surrounding area to pick up some of the existing finish. Make sure the steel wool and the spot you're working remains wet with this product, you don't want to dry rub it. Sometimes it takes more pressure than others, but do not continually rub in the same small spot or it will eventually remove the stain altogether leaving a light patch. Think of it like a blending technique. I've removed light scratches, paint that rubbed off onto the piece, black marring on the wood, light water rings that removed the finish, all sorts of things. Once you've fixed the problematic spots, I'll sometimes very lightly and quickly rub it onto the rest of that side of the furniture to even things out and blend the finish more. Then simply wipe it dry with a clean rag. It's that simple, and I've used this on countless pieces of furniture with success. Finally, if you have really big spots that's missing finish altogether, you may not have as much success. You may need to actually stain it. But don't worry about trying it on large spots, the worst that's going to happen is you won't see a significant improvement. The key is to have enough remaining finish to fill in the gaps.
