Can these packs be heated in the microwave just as they are - or do they need to be placed in water and then into the microwave? Thanks

Yes they can, no water needed, but they easily burst if overheated and some are weaker edges than others. I've had one birst using in microwave so you must do it in slow increments. I use them in freezer for migraine and they're brilliant!
