my go-to ambient music, but so much that rewards close listening
PM's band was always stunningly tight live. Lyle Mays is glorious here, no surprise. Full of special memories from decades ago, and still sounds fresh every listen. [Sue's husband's review]

Simply one of the best live records ever!
So this was the live record that vividly caught the rapidly rising stars of Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays in 1983 when they were in their early-mid 20's. In listening to the record and hearing the crowd noise, I am taken back to the many times that I was fortunate to catch Pat and Team dispensing their musical magic. Twice at University of Georgia, around the time this record was released, to be followed by multiple shows later on, including the Fabulous Fox theatre when they were touring a few years later in support of the First Circle record. This recording won a grammy for Best Jazz Fusion Performance in 1984, and is very special and unique to PMG fans as it contains both live versions of studio tunes, as well as several tunes that were ONLY released on this live recording, including The Fields, The Sky, Straight on Red, Farmer's Trust, Song for Bilbao, and Extradition. Most of them Brazilian-inflected in keeping with the burgeoning theme that would continue formuch of the 80's with other group records like Offramp, The First Circle, Still Life (Talking), and Letter From Home.Fast forward to now, the canon for Pat Metheny Group and Pat's solo work is rather vast at this point, but this one is and always will be a favorite for me, in part as it was the soundtrack for my life in my 20's. Despite those personal reasons, it stands on its own musically 33 years later. The groundbreaking work that PMG was doing then, and has continued to do by making jazz more accessible without compromising its core principles make this album one that will continue to stand the test of time. Whether on vinyl or digital, it all sounds fantastic and will transform you.

Excellent MP3 sound
but about the track listing: I always listen to disc 2 first, much better build up and flow IMO. Enjoy!

Truly, worth more than Gold
For those who already love Pat Metheny this is a must. For anyone else who is interested in music that is awesome, profound, challenging to listen to, and downright beautiful, then you won't regret it. But don't rely on a first impression. It will take more than one listen to appreciate this Gem.

Missing a third of this CD
I bought this double CD and there where songs not included. Like Straight on red and Travels and a few others.

Probably His Best "Live"
While Metheny is a studio performer, his live concerts during the ECM period are limited to this one, it is a exquisite recording of the "Group" at it's finest. The newly released vinyl is very clean, well pressed and though lacking much "bonus" features, it is a true replication of the original release. Something about playing vinyl that makes this richer and a welcome addition to my collection. Worth the modest fee compared to many of the "re-issued analog" $100+ offerings.

Great musicians playing great tunes
I used to have this on vinyl and somehow I did not get around to buying a cd version until now. It remains a remarkably fine album, with great tunes, played by gifted musicians and well recorded. I am very pleased that I finally regained my senses and got 5his agsin
