It comes separate, you can put the cane in so it is easy to use on left or right. It’s a little higher step then I wanted. And the cane goes into a cup in the step , to be fastened. I watched the video to understand how to use it and it works for me, relieving my knees to only have to go up a half step. I wish they fix the screw, which seems to loosen repeatedly. You have to be careful using anything on the stairs, but I find it very helpful. The price is a bit high for what it is, but I still recommend it.If you have other difficulties, like balance or leg strength, this might not be for you. Use it at first with someone monitoring you. My one criticism is that it's clunky to use as a walking cane, even for short distances.
