Whimsical tale of a girl and her gourd
My two boys and I love this book. We purchased it many years ago and read it every fall season. I, personally, look forward to opening our bin of fall stuff to retrieve it.Sophie has empathy and an imagination; she's strong-willed, but not defiant. Sophie cares about her friend, who happens to be a vegetable, and slowly has to come to terms with one of the realities in life: that things will degrade... but, thankfully, the spring holds new beginnings.

Perfect for the child who took school photos with squash
Story hit close to home as we have a child who also fell in love with a squash and took it everyone. This book instantly became a family favorite

Very cute
I thought this was original and unique. The oddity of a squash being so loved by a child, demonstrates the goodness of a child. It shows great emotions throughout the story and then a purpose. I liked how Sophie helps Bernice to grow into her own.The ending was very sweet. It brought closure and also left a smile because it sort of introduces the circle of life.I really like this story.

top favorite picture books
One of my top, top favorite picture books. How can a book about a squash bring tears to my eyes EVERY TIME I read it?!? This book is the perfect mix of heart and humor. Definitely one I immediately bought for our shelf at home.There is an independent bookstore next to our local farmer's market. They have a children's book section, but did NOT have this book! I talked to the owner, and said "How can you have all of this 'farmer's market' foot traffic and NOT have this book displayed front & center?!?"She looked into it, and it is now proudly displayed front and center every time I walk in during the farmer's market. I hope I helped this book make it into more homes, because it brings me and my child a ton of joy.This is a book that will stand the test of time. I have no doubt. :)
