Sharp, cool knives at a very good price point
This style of knife seems pretty popular lately, all saying they are Japanese knives. Japanese style maybe, but my research shows they are all made in China, as is this set. These knives are very sharp right out of the box. They are cool, manly looking knives, great for the barbeque, or even a rustic kitchen. The city skyline etched in the blade would have been more appropriate with a more traditional Japanese scene; minka, torii gate, pagoda and such, but the etching affects neither function or cleaning. and is done cleanly and clearly. The picture shows them compared to a 7" santoku and a 10" chefs knife. All of the blades on these are between 6 3/4 to 7" from handle to tip. I wouldn't say the holes are really helpful to have, but the knives are more or less balanced at that point. The "hammered" blades are still easy to clean. They are not particularly heavy. As for performance, I used them on a bamboo cutting board, which is very hard. Some say they are harder on knife edges, but I take that with a grain of salt. Either way, they have held the edge well so far. The handles are comfortable enough. I have not tried to use the cleaver as an actual cleaver, so I don't know how well it would hold up to chopping through a bone, but who does that these days anyway? They all have plenty of surface to easily keep the blade against your curled fingers to protect them, and easily guide the blade. I always wash, dry, and put my knives away immediately when I am done with them, so rust isn't a problem for me. Since the sharp edge goes completely from one end to the other, they will be easier to sharpen than the santoku blade in the picture. In summary, these aren't amazing, but are pretty good knives at this price point. I can't say they work better than any of my regular kitchen knives, but they certainly cut just as well.

Sharp!
These things are scary sharp. I can cut through frozen meat with no problem.

Good but could be better
Doesn’t cut through bone. I thought it was a real butcher set. Works good on mostly everything else. Left one in the sink and it rusted quickly on the side blade in the first week. Design is super cool.
