## Description

COLD STEEL MASTER TANTO VG-10 SAN MAI FIXED BLADE KNIFE: We have been producing Tantos for more than 30 years now, and there is still no factory or custom knifemaker that can approach the cutting, slashing, or piercing power of Tanto that is manufactured by Cold Steel. The Master Tanto features a deep lustrous satin finish on the hollow ground blade bevels and a contrasting line grain finish on the blade flats. This technique highlights our state-of-the-art grinding methods and emphasizes the Tanto's unique appearance. The Master Tanto comes with a VG-10 San Mai steel blade and the famous flattened oval Kraton handle. The oval shape provides a solid grip and resists rolling or twisting in the hand under hard use. Kraton is an unparalleled space-age material that won't crack or rot and is immune to the ravages of bad weather. The tapered, solid steel pommel is designed to concentrate the full force of a crushing blow in a small area so that even a moderately powerful blow can be remarkably effective. Each Master Tanto knife is supplied with a Secure-Ex sheath to protect the blade and allow you to wear it safely and securely.

Review: Love it but not "perfect"! - The blade is amazing. SHARP AF and well balanced. The handle material and sheath aren't what I'd like them to be - something I hope to upgrade. The sheath needs to be secure AND "quick draw". Not sure what I'll do for the handle. 550 wrap or something? But to be fair, I'm pretty sure they can't make what I want at this price point or at a price I'd be willing to pay for something I don't really need. 🤪 I've wanted "this" for a long time. I bought the small San Mai Lock Back pocket knife back in the 90's. LOVED the blade. Sharp, easy to sharpen, and holds an edge decently enough.
Review: AWESOME KNIFE ALL THE WAY! - The Cold Steel San Mai Master Tanto is an amazing knife. First, the fit of the handle to the pommel and hilt is as precise as one could hope for. The handle itself provides a very secure grip under a vast array of conditions. The finish is uniform through and through. The lines, bevels and angles are equally nice. Clearly, a lot of attention to detail was given this knife's construction. I'm sure some professional complainer will find something to gripe about, but all things considered, this is an exceptionally nice piece. What's even more amazing is the price. For $100 or so, you get way more than your money's worth. I've seen knives costing a lot more than this that were not as well crafted. This is a working tool, not a safe-queen show piece. The Master Tanto is nicely balanced and feels comfortable and secure in the hand. With its full tang, it's rock-solid to boot. Just as the package says, use caution when handling because it is scary sharp. The sheath has a belt provision, and it rides high and tight against the body. There is absolutely no tension on the blade when sheathed. If you invert a sheathed knife, it will easily and quickly fall out. For rapid deployment while worn on a belt, this may well be a good thing. If you need additional security while in the field, then the handle strap will keep the knife in place. While not military-grade tough (in my opinion), the sheath seems adequate. I'm one of those guys who has been there and done that, so it takes a lot to impress me, and the Master Tanto certainly does. What an awesome piece for the money!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Where is the magnum tanto xii made?**
A: I brough my Cold steel tanto 2 in the late 80. Yes, 40 years ago. It was made in Japan.

**Q: Any of you have a sheathing issue with the tanto ii? i had to send mine back, as it would not come out of the sheath.**
A: Yes, some customers have issues with excessive OR a complete lack of retention using Secure-Ex sheaths supplied with both the Cold Steel Master Tanto and the Cold Steel Outdoorsman fixed blade knives. I suspect it's due to Cold Steel using the identical sheath for both knives. Take a look at any online catalog images for the Outdoorsman and you'll clearly see the Secure-Ex sheath is formed with an "American Tanto" point - despite the Outdoorsman being technically closer to resembling a trailing point. Both have 6" blades but are not the same profile at all.

This (cost saving?) commonality means the Master Tanto may be excessively difficult to draw safely and the Outdoorsman will be flopping loose (requiring mandatory fastening of the retention strap).

As for how to remove the Master Tanto without struggling or flailing about, forget putting pressure on the grooved "thumb ramp" like you'd expect to. Instead, flip the sheath upside down so the finger guard of the knife is visible. Using your fingers, apply outward pressure to the open lip of the sheath until the knife can be removed or drops out of its own weight - but be careful, as the sharpened edge will be facing you! My own recently purchased "tight as hell" Master Tanto slid out easily this way.

The solution to both a too loose Outdoorsman and a too tight Master Tanto is to get an inexpensive replacement sheath made for the Buck Special knife. These can be found in both leather and nylon versions, and fit either Cold Steel knife very, very well, and forever fixes the too tight and too loose issues. And, if it matters to you, both styles of Buck 119 sheaths eliminate the "battle rattle" Secure-Ex character as well.

**Q: How should the knife be sharpened?**
A: A knife of this caliber requires a professional to sharpen. My sincere suggestion is to make arrangements with Cold Steel for this task. I believe this is free, but verify.

**Q: Is this product 3V or VG-10?**
A: VG 10/.....I did not like the sheath. Knife is great. Remember, the San Mai steel is a "sandwich type" steel. Harder on the outside and softer on the inside.........
