The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga

Truly the most complete resource on hatha yoga
This is the second time I'm buying this book. First was in the late 90s when I just began learning about yoga philosophy. I was privileged enough at the time to be able to practice at the NYC hatha yoga center founded by the author. It changed my life. In my late teens, too eager to "skip ahead" to find enlightenment without truly understanding one of the main principles of selfless service, and entrenched in an unhealthy relationship, I eventually let go of the book and yoga itself for years. Now I'm 41 with children, free of that relationship that I once solely lived for. I still don't think I'll ever be sitting atop the Himalayas alone with zero attachment to this life, as I'm very much happily attached to my children, but I think now I can apply the principles of yoga wholly to my human existence and still be at peace. Giving brings joy. Kindness returns joy. Trying to be your best self without harming others is experiencing the best of life on earth. This book is still as excellent as I remember... great for beginners and experienced yoga practitioners alike, no matter your religious background, if you are open to the possibility of spirit being reality and that we are all connected. For only the physical practice of yoga, there are more modern books and videos focusing only on that. But this book is authentic, truly "complete", and a must have for anyone serious about learning the philosophy as well as the physical teachings.

I would prefer Pilates to this but I know this better. There are no pilates classes close to me
This book has things in it I would'nt advise anyone to try. Some of it I tried such as veganism ,anorexia, and candle gazing. Candle gazing makesone blind, anorexia n fasting too much kills you (balance), and I believe in eating meat a bit as lions eat meat.(men need more meat usually).I think a bit of meat is needed to symbolize the sacrifice of christ on the cross. What I never tried in this book was the bulimia and the odd waythis guy cleans or whatever it is he does to his nose (sometimes that causes cancer). Yet this book is worth the price of admission for a flat bellyand the aid it helps one in dancing. The stomach flexing with breathing and some of the stretches create a balanced figure or so I thought it did in me.So I've purchased this again. This book along with some situp type exercises gave me a feminine four pack that Ive lost so I bought it again on kindle. I would prefer Pilates to this but I know this better .There are no pilates classes close to me. Buddhist philsophy is great and the cuisine of India delicous. Im christian now though.

Yoga is an ancient religion. Yoga excercies are a small part of the whole.
Hatha Yoga has been around for hundreds of years. In 45 years of daily yoga this is without doubt the best book you can find. It covers all aspects of yoga and has training tables for every age group. This book changed my life....let it change yours. Gerald L. Stovall

This is a great book.
As some of the other reviewers have pointed out, no book can contain every point on yoga.I have been using this large book as an aide to my practice for five years. For me it has been a wonderful guide. The many poses or asanas are wonderfully photographed, and the lessons section sets out various practice routines and time tables that are appropriate for every ability level. There is full section on the philosophy behind this yoga and its history, all of which is stated in a very clear and practical way.It is difficult to be all things to all people, but I think that this book does a good job at coming close!Enjoy.

Some problem!
I like this book so much but it clearly lacks editing, specially at the tables section where everything mixes up & we can't know what to practice.

Best Book I've ever found on Yoga, life and the universe as we know it
This is the absolute best book on Yoga. I've bought 15 extra copies over the years to pass it out to interested friends or employees. If you're interested in the mysteries of life, our bodies and souls, this should be one of the books to read. I've lost track of how many times I've read it or referred back to it, and I always learn something new.

An Important Resource for All Yoga Instructors
Every yoga teacher likely has this book, and if not, would do well to read it al once. For within it is the very foundation of Yoga practice. Start here is you are new to Yoga, and you will have good grounding, but it has to be re-read to get the greater value. For each time you practice, awareness rises, and you are able to take in more of the information next time you read the book.

Yoga books are like Goldilocks in the 3 Bears House...
I think yoga books are a lot like Goldilocks in the three bears house...some are too big, some too small (too brief or too trendy) and some are just right. Unfortunately, this one was "too big" for me. The text was very thorough and informative, but was too heavy on philosophy and ideology for me. Even trying to read it was a chore. I felt the photographs were dated and some of the images in this book even made me a little uncomfortable (not to mention many of the poses were way beyond my skill level). I like images or illustrations of yoga poses that evoke strength and peace, not unease. The better fit for me was Essential Yoga by Olivia Miller. She starts the book off by saying "...when you open a book about yoga, you often end up just reading about yoga instead of just doing yoga?" That's how I felt about The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga...I was just reading, not doing. For some this book will be "just right"; it is a comprehensive, well written book with a lot of information about the philosophy and spirituality of yoga.

A Good detailed Book
Has taught me a lot. Not suitable for your first period of learning Yoga. After a few years I have learned a great deal from it.

Très intéressant
J'ai voulu la version anglaise à cause de la traduction française parfois approximative.Les deux restent très intéressantes
