Absolutely no preservatives. Barley is a cereal grain that can be used for brewing, as well as in soups, stews, breads and other health foods. Barley has a rich, nutlike flavor and an appealing chewy, pasta like consistency. Barley is a great source of fiber and other important nutrients. All of the Joseph's Grainery brand Barley is grown on our family farm in the Palouse Region of Washington State. Unhulled barley must be soaked for 24 hours prior to cooking. Barley is an excellent filler with fiber instead of carbohydrates. This still keeps my ground turkey, barley, sweet potato and carrot stew affordable. I can throw it all in a pot to boil and have a great topper and/or meal in just 45 minutes. I don't soak it overnight, and I only boil it for 40-45 minutes. I made a fresh batch for my self using the soak and boil for 1-1/2 hours method but I didn't really notice much difference from what I made for them in the shorter time.
