Not Just a Pen—A True Writing and Drawing Companion
I’ve been using this pen for over 1.5 years, and it’s much more than just a writing tool—it makes both writing and drawing incredibly enjoyable. Its body, made of half metal and half plastic with red stripe details and a metal textured grip, feels both stylish and sturdy. The ergonomic round grip and balanced weight distribution make it comfortable for long writing sessions, never tiring or sweaty, and it constantly makes you want to keep writing. On paper, the pen glides smoothly; its writing is very fluid, and the different lead hardness options (2B, F, H) make it versatile and practical. The metal tip is durable and precise, and the overall build gives a sense of longevity. The only thing to watch out for is that the metal tip does not retract into the pen body—if it falls or is left unprotected, the tip can bend. I dropped it once early on and the tip bent, but this small issue didn’t diminish the enjoyment at all; it certainly didn’t stop me from buying it again. The weight is perfect—not too light, not too heavy—and writing feels effortless. I once had to use my old pen for a week while this one was elsewhere, and it felt so heavy and uncomfortable in comparison, which really highlighted how perfectly balanced and ergonomic the Rotring 500 is. Every time I use it, my fingers don’t get tired, and it fits in the hand like it’s saying, “keep writing me.” This pen is ideal for both everyday writing and precise drawing. Its design is elegant, it’s durable, and the price-to-performance ratio is excellent. Receiving it as a gift from my brother, and experiencing its smooth, fluid writing, has made it indispensable for me. If you’re looking for a high-quality, reliable pen that’s a pleasure to use, the Rotring 500 is definitely one of the best options out there.

My favorite pencil
This pencil is amazing; has a solid structure with a comfortable grip and ergonomic design. It is a plastic designed pencil and is cheaper than the 600 and 800, the design is suitable for students in college; who may not be cautious with their pencils as easily. It's easy to refill the pencil and there's no need to continuously open the pencil to take out the lead and place it back in like a few other pencils out there. It's a great pencil for beginners to the mechanical pencil game and those who want a high quality pencil without going overboard, especially for college students. The pencil has a perfect amount of weight to it, making it idle for long writing sessions. I use this pencil in my hobonichi, my school notebooks, writing personal notes to myself and everything else. I intend to get a few more of these pencils in the future and one that will stay at my desk.

Bought wrong lead size, but do not regret.
I incorrectly bought this 0.7 mechanical pencil over the 0.5 one, but I must say it is extremely high quality. It feels extremely comfortable on the hand when writing, and the metal material makes the pencil very durable.

A Fine Entry-Level Pencil
As a fan of the rOtring 600 (I have now owned two) and a general pen/pencil addict, I recently saw the 500 and decided to order it just for fun to see how it stacks up. It is a lot like the 600 but inferior in most ways (which is exactly what you would expect given the fact that it is around half the price). ## Grip The knurling on the grip is nearly identical to the 600, which means it is very nice. I have attached an up-close image of both pencils for comparison. I really like the grip on rOtring pencils. It is somewhat slim so if you have larger hands or prefer thick pencils, you might gravitate more towards something with a larger grip (e.g. the GraphGear 1000 which I have attached a photo of next to rOtring pencils for comparison). ## Body The body of the 500 is made out of plastic. The lines on the hex-shaped body aren't as pronounced as the 600 unfortunately. It looks OK but the plastic is shiny compared to the matte look of the 600. Also, the metal grip screws in to plastic threads which seems like an obvious point of failure to me. ## Weight This is my main beef with this pencil. It weighs next to nothing due to the fact that is has a plastic body and internals vs metal on the 600 (I have attached an image of the pencils and their internals side by side). The perfect weight of the 600 is what makes it such a special pencil. ## Lead Selector The lead selector on the 500 is really nice. I like the look of the silver highlights vs the 100% black of the 600. It doesn't feel as precise as the 600 when rotating it, but, that is a nitpick and it is better than the lead selectors on most pencils I have used. On most other pencils, the lead selector is part of the grip/body and you have to loosen the body in order to rotate it then tighten everything down when you have the correct lead selected. On the rOtrings, it is a separate mechanism on the back of the pencil. ## Lead Advancement Advancing the lead on the 500 isn't as precise and wonderful as the 600, but it feels fine and it advances roughly the same amount as the 600. I have attached an image of both pencils two clicks past being flush with the tip. For me, two clicks is the perfect amount of lead. Not so short that you have to advance the lead too often and so long that you break your lead frequently. ## Summary If you want the rOtring look / hex core design on a budget and don't mind a plastic body, the 500 is an OK pencil. If you have the budget, you should absolutely spring the extra $ for the 600. If you have big hands and don't care about the rOtring aesthetics, you should consider the GraphGear 1000.
