The 8-Inch Standard: A Technical Analysis of Plate Parallelism and Natural Cast Iron Quality
Testing Methodology: I conducted a three week evaluation of this 8-inch press involving approximately 50 individual tortillas. My testing focused on both nixtamalized corn masa and high-gluten flour doughs to determine how the plates handle varying levels of resistance and elasticity over high-volume sessions. Build Quality and Mechanical Advantage: The construction is heavy-duty, pure cast iron with a focus on structural integrity at the pivot points. The 8-Inch Surface: This diameter provides a versatile surface area. It is large enough for flour tortillas and wraps while remaining compact enough for standard kitchen storage. Plate Alignment: A common failure in lower-quality presses is "tilting," where one side of the tortilla is thinner than the other. This model maintains excellent plate parallelism, ensuring the top plate descends perfectly level every time. Ready-to-Use Engineering: Unlike many cast iron tools that require manual adjustment or tightening upon arrival, this unit was perfectly calibrated out of the box. The hinge tension is ideal, providing smooth operation without any lateral play or "wobble" in the handle. Performance Results: Uniformity: Using digital calipers, I measured the thickness across the 8-inch span. The variance was less than 0.6mm. This level of consistency ensures that every tortilla cooks evenly on the comal without leaving raw centers or over-charred edges. Leverage and Weight: The weight of the pure cast iron acts as a performance benefit. It provides the initial compression needed for the dough, which significantly reduces the physical effort required by the user. The handle length is well-proportioned to the 8-inch plate size, offering a smooth mechanical advantage. Dough Release: The natural surface texture is optimized to hold parchment or plastic liners securely. There was no sliding or shifting during the compression phase, even with high-moisture masa. Technical Note for Users: Because this is pure cast iron, proper maintenance is key. To preserve the factory-set hinge and the integrity of the iron, I recommend a light wipe-down after each use and a light coat of oil if you live in a high-humidity area. This ensures the pivot point remains fluid and the plates stay rust-free for long-term use. Final Verdict: This is an elite-tier tool for those who prioritize consistency and the longevity of traditional cast iron. The 8-inch diameter is the "sweet spot" for versatility, and the fact that it requires zero adjustment out of the box makes it a standout choice for both beginners and experienced cooks.

Durable and Versatile, the Press Itself Does Most of the Work! Love it!
This cast iron tortilla press is an excellent tool that delivers on both performance and value. It’s surprisingly versatile, I originally got it for tortillas, but have since used it for pie crusts and dumpling wrappers too. The press is simple to use, just place your dough ball slightly closer to the hinge (vs. the middle), close the lid, and press down with the handle. It flattens dough evenly into a nice circular shape that’s hard to replicate with a rolling pin, and does so quickly and consistently. The cast iron has a solid, heavy feel that actually works in your favor, you don’t need to apply much force to get great results. It comes pre-seasoned, which is nice, and while mine didn't have any rust or issues, I still recommend giving it a quick light oil coat every now and then to maintain it. Using parchment paper between the plates also help keep cleanup nice and easy. The handle feels sturdy and reliable with no signs of stress or cracking so far, and the flat, compact design makes storage easy, even with the handle still attached. All in all, works beautifully, and feels built to last. Definitely worth a try in my opinion!

Excellent tortilla press (8") -- heavy & durable cast iron (requires a bit of TLC) + easy to use...
This is an excellent tortilla press. I had a heavy, cast aluminum one many years ago and it worked great but somehow ended up getting lost in our many moves and I never replaced it. Over the last year or so, I've been looking at various types of presses from different brands. The aluminum ones I have seen are nothing like my original one, so I decided to focus on the wooden and cast iron versions. I have a lot of cast iron cookware and I use it all of the time -- I find it incredibly easy to use and very durable. So when this 8" version became available, I was very interested. I chose this one over the pricer HD version in the same size, and this one is definitely sturdy enough for my use. Some reviews mention a handle that is plastic rather than cast iron, but the press I received is 100% cast iron and very well made. My favorite brand of cast iron (the iconic USA manufacturer) doesn't make a tortilla press and I have noticed that some imported cast iron cookware is not as heavy and often has unfinished areas and large pores, but this brand is of very high quality. I already have a dutch oven made by Victoria (imported from Colombia) so I was sure this would also be top-notch. And it is. Since it is cast iron, it will need a bit of extra care to prevent rusting so if you are not familiar with seasoning cast iron, be sure to do a bit of research before ordering. The press is heavy, smooth and pre-seasoned and turns out perfect medium-sized corn tortillas (I roll flour tortillas) that are then cooked on a comal/griddle on the stove top. The lettering is very crisply rendered. There is a smaller 6 1/2" as well as a larger 10" version, but this 8" model is just the right size for my family. The hinge pins and especially the cotter pins don't seem particularly robust, but they are holding up well so far + they can easily be replaced if needed -- they are inexpensive and readily available at a hardware store. I think this tortilla press is well worth the modest cost.

Heirloom tortilla press
This thing is the best tortilla press I've ever owned. The weight and material of it is exactly what you need to make the perfect tortillas, tostones, etc. I have struggled with so many bad tortilla presses my whole life until I finally decided to bite the bullet and spend the extra money on this. This tortilla press will no doubt out live me. If you are my great grandchild and you are reading this review, your welcome!

Good quality and consistent.
I’ve been using this at least once a month since I bought it for masa tortillas. It’s consistent and I’m happy with the end product. It’s good quality material and works well. I use a plastic sheet when I press and I haven’t had any issues.

Impecable Calidad

Top Drawer Quality. Heavy Duty rugged casting.
I’d give this press 6 stars if I could. Casting is rugged and flawless. Very well seasoned. Made 16 5” tortillas in no time. The key is to use two cast iron fry pans. One on medium, the finishing one a little hotter than medium. Preheat. Use no oil. I also use two separate uncut zip lock bags. Make your dough using directions on Masa Harina bag. Roll a ball of masa harina about the size of a golf ball. Flatten slightly with your palm. Place on press covered with zip lock bag. Then place other zip lock bag on top of ball. Close lid and press lightly with lever. No need to press hard. End result is a 1/8” thick approx 5” diameter tortilla. Lift top zip lock plastic carefully then slide lower zip lock onto your palm. Tortilla peels off easily. Then into first pan. 15 seconds.Flip after 15 seconds onto second side for another 15 seconds. Then transfer onto the second hotter pan for 30-45 seconds. It will puff up. Then remove. Meantime prep another ball of dough onto press and have it ready for the transfers.Beautifully easy. You will be able to keep the assembly line rhythm once you get the hang of it. So easy and seamless. I found using a complete zip lock bag for each side makes it easier to make and peel off the tortilla. I suspect the double layer of plastic allows for movement without pinching the tortilla. Very pleased with this purchase. It’s a lifetime purchase and next I will try white and whole wheat tortillas. Washed complete press in very hot water and dried it off. Noted the beading of water on every part of this very well seasoned press. All edges nicely rounded and finished. Beautiful casting. I love cast iron cookware and have very fine and some very expensive pieces. This one is definitely a keeper. This press I will experiment with drying flowers and stems. One or two layers. Cover each side with heavy plastic so no moisture rusts the press. Lock lever with an appropriate weight.
