Three Purple Tree Collard Cuttings

Q: Will they survive zone 7 (Chattanooga, TN)?

They may or may not survive a light frost depending on how long it lasts. Some people have had luck with them in zone 7. Best bet would be to find a way to cover them or take cuttings and root them in case the plant does not survive.

I would recommend a one gallon container. You can always keep potting it up as the roots fill out.

Q: I'm in los angeles area, is late Jan, early Feb a good time to start these? Do they come with some leaves too, or just stalks?

In your climate that is a great time to start them. The cuttings come exactly as pictured. You don’t want any leaves because that actually slows down the rooting process. They will grow new leaves when they are ready to. In your climate there will probably be new leaves on them starting within week after putting them in a container.

Q: What kind of fertilizer is used for the tree callards? And what kind of potting soil is used?

We recommend the highest quality potting soil you can afford if the Tree Collard is going to be in a container. Black Gold Organic is great and we also like Recipe 420 by EB Stone. It is hard to say what is available in your area. Mixing in some worm castings in a container is a great idea once the cuttings are rooted. Long term, tree collards would appreciate an application 1x-2x a year of ground Calcium (fine oyster shells) and Rock Dust (Glacial, Basalt, or Azomite) This helps put minerals back into the soil. Because Tree Collards are a long-lived perennial, they could use that replenishment.
