## Description

Speed and digital precision are paramount in the latest 405 Pro Digital Geared Head, the 405 provides ideal support and fast, pinpoint positioning for professional medium format cameras with conventional or digital backs. The 405 Pro Digital Geared Head was designed specifically to meet the more exacting, time-sensitive needs of busy professional digital photographers who shoot with medium format or 35 mm camera/back with payloads up to 7.5 Kg. It utilizes large, easy-to-grip knobs that provide smooth, positive, geared control through 360° pan and +90° -30° frontal and lateral tilt. In addition to its 3-D geared functions, the 405 also incorporates a unique feature that allows you to instantly disengage the gears and rough position the camera by hand, then instantly reengage them for ultra-precise final alignment.

Review: Hard on my wallet but no regrets. - I've been using the excellent Acratech ball head all these years for mostly architectural work but this Manfrotto 405 head is really what I needed. The knobs are super precise and combined with your internal screen grid (I use a Canon 5ds), no more "close enough, I'll straighten that in Photoshop", and you know who you are... This is the tool that will make your job easier and right the first time, just buy it. Only downside is that it's heavy and you do not want to drop and break it. UPDATE: After about a year and a half of using this head, the gear system deteriorated - first I noticed some play on the base plate (not cool for an architectural photographer like myself), then soon after I could no longer use the "ultra precise" tilt knob. At this price this should not happen after barely two years, and I treat my equipment well. Maybe a got a lemon but this is not acceptable from a company like Manfrotto.
Review: Very Precise. - !You get what you pay for. This is not a cheap investment. I’m a real estate agent & take my own photos. This requires the ability to quickly get your lines straight for good photos. You can see in my quick video that when the bubble level says your camera is level, it’s level!! The head is very sturdy, no plastic in the body & I like the additional bubble level when shooting portrait for bathrooms. It feels like it should last a lifetime. Any cons, not really, only that the dials are hard to turn, almost gave me a blister between my thumb & index finger until I grabbed the knobs differently. The knobs need to be tight, however, as this does not need to be locked after moving to the desired position. I’d recommend this head to anyone thinking about it. Very professional looking when you go to a client’s home. This is a photo I took, it’s 6 photos layered & edited on PhotoShop. 6 photos perfectly lined, the head didn’t budge a millimeter.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does this have a spring to assist the closure of the quick release latch? I upgraded from the 410, and this is missing in my new 405.**
A: Yes, the lever is supposed to spring back by itself. When I was using a 410, that spring broke eventually and I had to close the lever manually. When I bought my first 405, that lever failed - not just the spring, but the little cylindrical button that releases the lever when pressed down by the QR plate. I returned it. When I bought my second 405, I also bought an ARCA-compatible clamp so that I would never have to use the Manfrotto lever and stress the spring. I also have put ARCA clamps on my monopod and anything else that has a quick-release, so everything is uniform and I never have to worry about breaking springs. If there's *anything* wrong with a Manfrotto product right out of the box, I would definitely return it immediately and either exchange it or pick another item. Problem is, the only other real options are back down to a 410 or up to an ARCA D4.

**Q: Is this tripod head metal or plastic?**
A: Metal. It’s a little on the heavy side. Great piece of equipment.

**Q: Have anyone used this head on a Vanguard Tripod? Are the gears inside made out of steel or aluminum?**
A: I'm using the Manfrotto 405 pro on a Vanguard Abeo Plus 364 AT Tripod. This is is a large heavy tripod that works well with the Manfrotto 405, which is a big clunky head (~5 lb), but superb for macro photography owing to its precise movements. Personally, I would not use it with a lightweight tripod and Vanguard no longer sells the Abeo Plus 364 AT. I believe the gears are a "worm gear" type and turn inside a grooved nylon collar. There is a You Tube video about reparing a 405 (search you tube with "Manfrotto 405 Repair") and I'm pretty sure the video discusses the construction materials of the gear assemblies. Also, Hejnar Photo sells a Manfrotto to Arca Swiss conversion kit for the 405 which allows it to mount cameras with Arca Swiss compatible plates and l-brackets. I converted my 405 as soon as I got it frm B&H.

**Q: Is this compatible with the q5 plate?**
A: No, it is not.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Dog Gone Good As It Gets!
*by P***G on August 13, 2009*

I have several heads and my best two are both Manfrotto Heads. The 405 Pro Geared Head is big, very well built, heavy, and very easy to use. Great for long shots or very close in macro shots where stability and precise movement is critical. Would be best used in a studio or with non moving subjects. I am very pleased with this very fine professional head with great 3 axis controls. Not for folks with point and shoot gear, more for the Pro with heavy or large equipment. I am very satisfied with this head and all the rest of my Manfrotto gear... they are all the best for the bucks paid out! V/R KMW
