It is known that Maté contains Theobromine an interesting compound. Overheating it changes it to caffeine. If you cannot drink your Maté immediately after pouring in the "hot" water you're probably drinking a more caffeinated form of Maté. There are studies about Maté stating that when consumed the central nervous system is boosted without the cardio system boost.
