The fruit picker is just an end piece used for the specific job of picking fruit. The DOCAPoles, and many others, come in many different lengths. Some are fixed lengths and others are telescoping. I have a telescoping pole that adjusts from 6 to 24 feet. I have a large peach tree, and this pole and picker can reach almost all the fruit.

Q: What is the inside diameter of the ring that defines the opening of the basket, i.e. what is the maximum size fruit that it will hold?

The diameter is a good size and it easily handle grapefruits which is what I used it for

Q: I took the pole out for the first time after purchasing it 2 years ago and can't find fruit picker. Will order another. Do I need an adaptor?

No separate adaptor needed. The fruit picker scews right onto the Docazoo pole. If you have a different brand of pole, you may need an adaptor, but you won't know that until you have the picker.
