Depends on what the power rating, the length etc. Typically we use 14-16 for our installs for the front speakers. 12g for subwoofers. Unless we are running huge amounts of power such as 2500 pure watts. (Arc audio Kar series KS2500 sub amp. Then we use 10g

does the black polarity stripe on one side go in the black speaker connection?

If you plug the black wire into the negative (-) speaker terminal on the amplifier, you will then plug it into black (negative) terminal on your speaker/subwoofer. The wire color doesn't matter as long as you plug the positives with positives and the negatives with negatives:)
