My gen 1 AirTag was nearly destroyed by a car or snow plow before I could retrieve it. The white plastic case dented, the metal cover mangled, the speaker popped out, and the plastic ring that latches the back cover broken out. However, if one can somehow just hold the battery inside, the AirTag still works! No longer waterproof, but technically 100% functional.
