in zone 10 they just fade for the winter...in zones where it does go below freezing they hibernate for the winter. Check information about the growing zone you live in and the temperature range and then read about caladiums....that would give the most precise information.

Are they deer resistant ?

The deer love them. The good thing for me was that after the deer made breakfast of them, they grew new leaves and still looked beautiful.

They grow best in shady areas. They add a lot of color to a shady garden.

What are the "safe" planting zones outside

You can grow them in summer in most zones, if temps stay 70s or higher. Zones lower than Zone 9 must lift the bulbs for the winter.
