The point of the double wall is to help keep the brewing coffee at the right brew temperature, between 195-205 degrees F. Of all the possible misunderstandings about French press brewing in double wall presses, this is this common mistake. The "thermal" design is not meant to store coffee after brewing. Brewing for more than four minutes allows brewing to continue and will soon turn bitter and over-extracted. A French press, Frieling included, is a coffee brewer only, it is not a "thermos" nor was it ever intended to be. **Q: Did anyone notice "scraping" sound when pushing down plunger? It seems as if the fit is too tight. Wouldn't this eventually scratcj the interior?** A: When that scraping sound occurs, just pull the plunger back up and then try to push it down again. The tight fit keeps the coffee grounds down keeping them out of the coffee.
