All four slots are independent, and easily identifies failed and failing cells. This is a big device, and can charge sizes up to D - the big ones. But as a result, the bumps on the metal terminals are high up, which means AA and AAA have to be suspended in mid-air to make contact, and can disconnect if knocked. It should come with sleeves or a tray for these smaller sizes.
