will this melt thru plastic stock tanks?

...unless the tank is not level and there is only a little water left in the tank and it puddles at one end. If the heater is partly IN the water and partly OUT of the water; then the water will cause the heater not to shut off and the part that is OUT of the water will get hot enough to melt holes in a Rubbermaid tank. I know; I should have kept the tank full.

Question 2

The instructions say "DO NOT USE EXTENSION CORDS!". I plan to use a short E.C. (outdoors application). Anyone have any problems running an E.C.?

I run a 100' heavy extention cord out to the barn and I have never had an issue.  Just be sure it is a heavy duty extension,  IE:  12/2 or 14/2 wire.  It only draws a light duty - as much voltage as a 60 W light bulb I believe,  just check the specs.....

what guage wire for a distance of 75 ft.should be used?

I don't understand the question. The device should be plugged directly into outlet. It stipulates do not use extension cords. This is 1500 watts and 15 amp if I'm not mistaken. I don't have the box any longer. My barn is wired with 12 gauge wire. My outlet is less than 40 feet to the circuit box. If you intend to use an extension cord, you'd have to find one that is suitable for that draw. So many outdoor extension cords are only 16 gauge wire. You'd have to find the specs of any extension cord you plan to use.  This is what I found in search http://www.amazon.com/Yellow-Jacket-2885-Heavy-Duty-Contractor/dp/B000BQM06U This is a 12 gauge 3 prong cord. I did have a failure, I believe a defected product. My Di Icer I purchased this year burned out my outlet. This I understands happens when the product draws more amps than the outlet or wire is rated for. My barn is wired correctly and this outlet failed..If you read my updated review/comment..I've had other heaters like this for years. They worked great until they didn't..I assume they were Farm Innovators. This years purchase kept the water WARM, not just ice free in Michigan. Beware..I had issues and my wiring was correct.Using this product in a manner (extension cord) may create a fire or shock hazard, especially if using a underrated extension cord.

Question 4

will this keep a hot tub from freezing and blowing out the pvc? Broken heater, just need to keep the water above freezing.

I do not know. I would call the manufacturer about that. Also a hot tub holds much more than the 100 gallon horse tanks we use it for so I do not know if it will keep up if it gets into temps below 20.
