DARK BEFORE THE DAWN As Gu Mang’s mind continues to deteriorate, he and Mo Xi set out for the prefecture of Lin’an, hoping to find a legendary sage with the ability to summon Gu Mang’s missing souls. Chances of success are vanishingly small, but Mo Xi is unwilling to give up any hope of restoring his beloved to health. Upon arrival, however, Mo Xi and Gu Mang find no such fabled sage, but a familiar face—Murong Chuyi, who has arrived with the rest of the Yue Clan, including Yue Chenqing and the estranged Jiang Yexue, to complete a perilous blood ritual. What begins as a chance encounter soon turns deadly as Mo Xi stumbles across one of the clan’s darkest and most deeply buried secrets. Great story, but the typos
Love the story. But seven seas? Getting SO BAD on the typos. I mean one on the FIRST PAGE! Like most books I read, if there is any typos, I don't notice them, they're not bad enough. The typo is a name! So I'm like who dat? I realized eventually it was a small side character from the last book. I noticed other typos in the book too. I think this is the one with the most typos I've read from seven seas. Get the digital so MAYBE they'll correct the typos someday

So much happens ...
Nothing and no-one is as they seem. Mo Xi wishes to find Gu Mang's lost souls as his powers of remembrance fade but is the Wise Sage who can help them really a diversionary tactic? Battle, vengeance, sacrifice and revelations of the past come like a tsunami of event. What is the connection between Murong Chuyi and Gu Mang. What is beautiful is that Gu Mang recovers some of his early power of leadership and personality and takes out his army once more as General. I personally felt the relationship of comrades in arms, that sense of brotherhood and loyalty and willingness to sacrifice was very well expressed. There are lots of strong points to the story but that was a favourite one for me. I have noted before that there are shades of Chu Wanning in Murong Chuyi but that is not to imply a lack of imagination in the author. This is the same fantasy universe so often people and situations are linked albeit not in the same time frame. Lost or unrequited love is the prime motivator for many characters' actions; some obtain immortality but cannot move on from unfulfilled hopes. They stay essentially recognisably human in their failings. Gu Mang is a pure and idealistic man with a true desire to save others; Mo Xi is the backbone of the nation and his sense of responsibility is second to none. As well as their love for each other, these traits are the unifying thread throughout the whole volume. Be ready to weep.

Best volume so far
This was probably my favorite volume in the series. First, it started with the Yue Clan family drama. The Yue Clan family drama always steals the show for me. Then, we get a really intense confrontation with grand reveal after grand reveal. At a certain point I laughed at the sheer amount of reveals per chapter, but do not misunderstand me: I enjoyed every second. The reunion scene before the Northern Frontier Army was incredibly touching. This scene actually managed to make me tear up. The illustration fit it perfectly. And I really like how the author put the foundation of the issue behind the main characters’ relationship to light: how do you love and devote yourself to someone who will always put the greater good first?

Rollercoaster of tears and emotions
Where to begin...if you think the last volume had twists and turns on every corner, oh boy, this one comes along and gives you whiplash. And the cliffhanger is so heartbreaking, but also full of hope that maybe, just maybe a Happy End might be possible in the end.
