Will this valve stay in each position without a cable hooked up ? Could I just pop my hood to change it each direction?

Not likely. I ended up installing a locking cable so I could lock it either open or closed. The force of the coolant flow was pushing the valve partially open and allowing coolant flow through the heater core with a standard push/pull style cable. I highly doubt this valve will stay shut without something holding it in a set position.

I need a valve to fit my 1957 ford fairlane heater core due to the one on my car's o rings are worn out and leaking, do you have a replacment?

I own a 66 El Camino and used this successfully to isolate the heater core during the summer. It is really universal and just attaches to your existing heater hoses before they attach to the heater core thus, bypassing the coolant back to the engine. I hope this has been helpful and good luck.

If I turn my heat selector to hot, and the cable retracts, do I need the push or pull valve?

If the cable retracts then you need the pull valve.

Will this work on 1997 - 2003 f150 or expedition? is this better than just dong a "u" shaped heater hose bypass?

I am not familiar with ford truck heaters , mine was used on a hot rod , to control the heat from inside the cab . It works great for that function . The only thing I would want to be aware of ,would be the size of the hoses attached to it . I believe all the valve ports are 5/8 inch ,but it comes with 2 adapters to 3/4 inch .
