A creative way to do a documentary.
If you enjoy Hip-Hop, Pop, Rap, Lego, The Neptunes and Pharrell (solo). Then this movie is what you’ve been waiting to see. It’s fun, creative and colorful. This one is for Gen X and Millennials.

Not for kids
Fun music and visuals. But didn’t appreciate the uncensored swear words including the s-word 3 times. I had to shut it off as I was watching with my child.

While The Music Is Brilliantly Featured, The Visuals Are Colorful, But Who Is This For?
🍿 🍿 1/2 (Out of 5)Basically, its a “LEGO bricks movie” telling the life story of singer/songwriter and record producer Pharrell Williams -- from his childhood in Virginia to his success in the music and fashion industry as directed by Morgan Neville and written by Neville, Jason Zeldes, Aaron Wickenden and Oscar Vazquez but it falls short in its purpose. I do enjoy the music and mixes of Pharrell, but I left the theatre wondering – what’s the point? I was expecting more Lego fun and humor with lots of music and I got an animated, sometimes slow, but an interesting/educational PG documentary.I couldn’t figure out what this movie was - for children (being painted in the Lego theme/universe) or an adult autobiography with subject matter that is often poignant, adult by subject matter albeit dressed up in flipping animated Lego pieces, but I don’t see kids getting the under lying messages. It was also very dull in the middle. It starts fairly well with his family introduction in the beginning and is touching with the ‘Be Happy’ song explanation toward the end, but it went often off the deep end with his philosophical points of view and ideologies - for me.Completed with animated Legos and commentary (interviews) of Morgan Neville, Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, and Snoop Dogg it all seemed to be just a hodgepodge of interviews boasting/explaining his career. The editing is back and forth by Jason Zeldes, Aaron Wickenden and Oscar Vazquez and of course the music by Pharrell Williams (the songs and themes) and Michael Andrews (who did the actual score for the film) was really good (with a nice nod to Steevie Wonde inserted at the beginning), but with the exception of the inner story of ‘Be Happy’ being very touching – the overall film is basic a PR, slightly-egocentric driven centerpiece of Pharrell and his rise to fame. It’s very colorful and fun in parts and is filled with lots of music.Lorenzo M.
